BUIES CREEK, N.C. - UNC Greensboro rode goals from Cruz Oronos and
Sven Picton to a 2-0 men's soccer victory over host Campbell
Wednesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Spartans (2-4-1) scored multiple goals in a game for the first
time this season and ended a two-match losing streak. Campbell
(1-5-0) suffered its third-straight loss.
Campbell nearly broke in front in the 12th minute when Ben York's
pass was touched on by Vince Petrasso to Khalil Johnson, who beat
the back four, but his right-footed shot was stopped on a foot save
by UNCG keeper Peyton Ford.
Just two minutes later, UNCG defender Matt Elliott connected from
distance on a right-footed shot that sailed about two yards high of
the cross bar.
The Spartans took the lead in the 17th minute on a 30-yard blast
from Cruz Oronos into the upper left corner of Ryan Amons' net.
Less than three minutes later, Oronos was open in the box, but
Amons kept the Camels within one with a foot save.
In the 35th minute, Johnson nearly equalized with a heavy
right-footed effort from outside the area, but Ford dove to tip the
ball past the left post for a corner kick.
UNCG nearly added a second goal in the 70th minute when Sven Picton
cut back on a counter attack at the top of the area, but Amons
again left his feet to make the save.
The Spartans added an insurance marker in the 88th minute when A.J.
Nelson dribbled into the left side of the box and slotted the ball
to Picton, whose first-touch effort found the net.
Campbell finished with a 15-13 edge in shots, but only four of CU's
efforts were on target, compared to five for the visitors. Ford, a
red-shirt freshman, notched his first career shutout by making four
saves. Amons had three saves in his first start in the Camel
nets.
The Camels return to action on Saturday in a 5:00 p.m. kick-off at
home vs. Richmond.
