BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Richmond keeper Brock Tomlinson made 11 saves
and the Spiders scored on two of their three shots on goal to
defeat Campbell 2-1 in men's soccer action on a rainy Saturday at
the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Richmond (3-5) won despite being out-shot 19-6, 12-3 in shots on
goal. Campbell (1-6) dropped its fourth-straight game.
The Spiders got on the board first in the 10th minute when Austin
Skakle was whistled for a foul in the area on Richmond forward Kern
Gardiner. Jake Russell converted the resulting penalty kick,
hitting a right-footed shot inside the left post.
Richmond keeper Brock Tomlinson kept the game close with six
first-half saves, including one in the 17th minute when he left his
feet to deny a left-footed effort from Vince Petrasso that was
headed for the upper right corner.
The Camels equalized in the 26th minute when Petrasso sent a pass
across the box to Justin Smith, who volleyed the ball down to
Khalil Johnson. The junior from Jamaica took a touch; then hit a
left-footed shot from a severe angle that banged off the cross bar
and into the net.
Less than three minutes later, Tomlinson dove again, this time to
save a shot from Mitchell Cardenas at the near post.
In the 29th minute, Jason Keever's shot from just inside the box
beat Tomlinson, but caromed off the bar.
Campbell out-shot the Spiders 11-4 in the first half, including a
7-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Camels threatened to go ahead in the 50th minute when Keever's
pass split the back line, but Tomlinson's foot save on Justin
Smith's shot in the box kept the game level.
Richmond, however, scored what proved to be the winner in the 52nd
minute when Colin Lincoln sent a long pass forward on a counter
attack to Gardiner, who dribbled past Amons and scored into the
empty net.
Campbell's best chance to draw level came in the 74th minute when
Smith headed the ball down to Petrasso in the box for a shot, but
Tomlinson drove to his right, then covered the rebound.
The Camels open Atlantic Sun Conference play Thursday at
Lipscomb.
