BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Caleb Thomas capped a furious final 15 minutes
with the decisive goal in the 88th minute to lead William &
Mary to a 3-2 men's soccer win over Campbell Saturday night at the
Eakes Athletic Complex.
Despite creating numerous chances, the Tribe (1-1) and Camels (0-2)
played 75 minutes without a goal before W&M struck twice in a
2:10 span, only to see the Camels equalize over the following
6:58.
Ian Stowe broke the drought at 75:20, when he ran forward to meet a
cleared corner kick and his 27-yard shot took a slight deflection
and landed inside the right post. Price Thomas doubled the W&M
edge in the 78th minute with a blast from 30-plus yards that
finished off a counter attack.
The Camels, however, answered in the 79th minute when Jason Keever
finished a one-two with Brian Urioste in the area to draw CU within
2-1.
Just three minutes later, Justin Madrid nearly equalized when his
effort from the left edge of the box caromed off the right
post.
Campbell drew level in the 86th minute when keeper Ted Awana
controlled a long ball from the Tribe and passed to Madrid, who
sent a long pass over the top of the defense. Vince Petrasso ran
on to the ball and hit a low right-footed shot from a sharp angle
to knot the match at 2-2.
Less than two minutes later, however, Andrew Hoxie turned at the
top of the Camel area. Awana charged from his line to clear the
ball, but it fell to Caleb Thomas, who scored into the vacated net
for what proved to be the winner.
The score line matched last year's result at Williamsburg, when
W&M rallied for a late equalizer, then won in overtime.
Campbell finished with a 10-9 edge in shots. Awana had three
saves, while Andrew McAdams finished with two for the Tribe.
Awana kept the Camels close in the early going. The senior dove to
take the ball of Nathaniel Baako's boot in the box in the fourth
minute.
In the 19th minute, Baako fed Price Thomas in the box, but his
right-footed effort caromed off the right post and back to Awana.
One minute later, Baako's left-footed shot from outside the box
took a slight deflection, but Awana dove to his left to make the
stop.
Vince Petrasso created three first-half chances, including one that
forced a save from Tribe keeper Andrew McAdams.
The Camels return to action Tuesday in a 4:00 p.m. start at Georgia
Southern.
