JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - East Tennessee State scored three times in
the second half and dealt Campbell a 4-0 loss Thursday night in the
Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer opener for both schools.
The Bucs (6-2, 1-0), ranked eighth in this week's South Region
poll, won their fourth-straight match. Campbell (2-3-3, 0-1-0) saw
its three-match unbeaten string halted. Seven of the first eight
teams on the Camel slate have been ranked in their respective NSCAA
region at the time they faced CU.
Senior Guilherme Reis gave the Bucs the lead in the 29th minute on
a free kick just outside the Camel area.
Itode Fubara doubled ETSU's advantage in the 66th minute when he
finished a one-two combination with David Geno in the CU box.
David Haba pushed the edge to three off Jaron Westbrook's assist in
the 84th minute. Geno then capitalized on a Camel turnover when he
scored his third goal of the year with only 44 seconds remaining in
the second half.
The two-time defending A-Sun regular season champion Camels
suffered their first loss in a league opener since 2004.
Thursday's decision also marked just the second setback in
conference play since the start of the 2008 campaign. Campbell
stands 16-2-2 vs. the A-Sun during that span.
The Bucs finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots, 9-4 in shots on
goal. Both Campbell's Ryan Amons and Ronnie Hreha of ETSU had four
saves.
ETSU defeated Campbell for the first time in its three-year men's
soccer history. The Camels won one-goal decisions in both 2008 and
2009.
Campbell continues its two-match road swing with a 2:00 p.m.
kick-off Saturday at USC Upstate.
