BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell secured an important three points in
the Atlantic Sun Conference standings with a 7-0 victory Thursday
night over Belmont at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Camels (6-6-4, 4-4-0 A-Sun) tied a school record for goals
scored against an A-Sun opponent and exploded for their largest
output since a 7-1 victory over Belmont on Nov. 13, 2008.
Keegan Terry and Khalil Johnson each scored twice, while Mitchell
Cardenas had three assists for the Campbell, which won its
second-straight game and notched its sixth shutout of the year.
A senior forward, Johnson launched 11 shots, 6 on target, and added
an assist to raise his season tally to 11 points on five goals and
one assist. Cardenas upped his totals to 14 points on 3 goals and
8 assists, while Terry netted his third and fourth strikes of the
year.
Coupled with Mercer's 2-0 victory over Lipscomb Thursday night,
Campbell moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league
table and a tie for the third seed in next week's conference
tournament entering Friday's action. East Tennessee State (7-2
A-Sun) has already secured one of the top two seeds, while Stetson
follows at 5-2 heading into Friday's home game against North
Florida.
The top two seeds will receive a first-round bye into the A-Sun
semifinals (Nov. 11). The third and fourth seeds will host
first-round matches against the fifth and sixth seeds on Sat., Nov.
6.
Campbell finished Thursday's outing with a 37-8 advantage in shots,
including a 16-4 edge in attempts on goal. Belmont (6-10-0, 3-5-0)
mustered just one shot on goal in the opening half.
"We've created these
chances all year, but tonight things just clicked for our team,"
said Campbell head coach Steve Armas. "Hopefully, we'll be able to
build on this performance going forward."
After applying pressure for the first 20 minutes, Campbell jumped
in front with a pair of goals in a 2:30 span.
Freshman defender Aleksi Tossavainen scored his first career goal
on a header from Cardenas' corner kick in the 24th minute on CU's
10th shot (and fourth corner) of the half.
In the 26th minute, Khalil Johnson found Keegan Terry open at the
top of the area and the sophomore's right-footed strike caromed off
the left post and into Wesley Wray's net for his third goal of the
season.
Johnson
nearly added a third CU goal in the 39th minute on a dipping
right-footed smash that Wray had to punch down to be cleared for a
corner. Just a minute later, Johnson sprinted down the left flank
with the ball; then crossed to Terry, whose sharp header was just
high of Wray's bar.
Campbell ended the opening half with a 19-2 advantage in shots, 6-1
in attempts on goal.
Belmont saw a near chance to cut the lead in half slip by in the
57th minute. Brandon Tarr turned and dribbled by the Camel back
four to the edge of the box, but before the sophomore striker could
get a shot away, Tossavainen tackled the ball out of danger.
Johnson nearly added to the lead in the 65th minute with a
left-footed smash outside the box that beat Wray, but was cleared
off the line by Alex Jenison at the right post.
Terry's header from Cardenas' free kick pushed the advantage to 3-0
in the 70th minute. Cardenas found Johnson with a long diagonal
ball just three minutes later and the Jamaican deposited the ball
into the top right corner of Wray's net.
Just over five minutes later, Justin Franz sent a pass down the
left flank to Johnson, who cut back, then lofted the ball over
back-up keeper Juho Illi and into the net.
Only 35 seconds elapsed before Justin Smith converted a Belmont
turnover into a 30-yard rip into the upper right corner. Freshman
Adrian Mosquera then scored his first career goal in the 87th
minute after a failed clearance from a corner kick fell to his feet
and the New Jersey native turned and deposited a right-footed shot
into the lower left corner.
Camel keeper Ryan Amons posted his sixth shutout of the year while
making four saves.
The victory was Campbell's seventh-straight over the Bruins and
extended CU's lead in the all-time series to 9-2
Campbell ran the best record in A-Sun regular season play since
2005 to 36-9-5 and improved to 24-5-3 in its last 32 games during
the month of October.
The Camels host Lipscomb Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the final home
contest for five CU seniors -- J.P. Blosser, Eric Debrah, Ronnie
Hinton, Khalil Johnson and Ben York. CU will also present its
annual team honors -- the Jim McVeigh Award (most promising
freshman) and Glen Brewster Memorial Award for leadership and
courage.
