GREENVILLE, S.C. - Campbell keeper Ryan Amons earned his
second-straight shutout as the Camels played to a scoreless draw
against Furman Tuesday night at Eugene Stone III Soccer
Stadium.
Amons made two saves and extended his scoreless string to 200
minutes while posting his fourth shutout of the year for Campbell
(3-3-4), which held an 18-13 edge in shots.
In only the 10th game of the season, Campbell set a school record
with its fourth draw. The old record of three ties was first set
in 1978 and equaled in 1981, 1983 and 2007.
Fabien Vorbe of Furman was sent off in the 41st minute for a hard
foul, but the Camels could not capitalize on the man advantage.
"Overall, we felt rejuvenated and motivated to press the game,"
said Campbell head coach Steve Armas. "Once we got in the game, we
started to create turnovers. It was a good positive experience,
moving forward to conference play this weekend."
The Camels nearly claimed a sudden victory in the 104th minute when
Keegan Terry's shot beat keeper Maros Valko, but was cleared off
the line by a Nicky MacKain.
CU, which held a 5-0 edge in shots in the second overtime period,
had four shots on target all night, compared to only two for Furman
(5-4-2).
Tuesday's contest was Campbell's fourth this year against Southern
Conference competition. The Camels finished those games with a
1-1-2 mark, including a win over Appalachian State, loss at
Davidson and draw at UNC Greensboro.
Campbell stands 21-2-3 in its last 26 games during the month of
October, and has out-scored those foes by a 50-26 margin.
The Camels return to Atlantic Sun Conference action Saturday in a
4:00 p.m. kick-off at home against Mercer.
