BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell rallied from a 7-0 deficit to lead
11-8 but UNC Asheville scored the final seven runs of the game to
beat the home standing Camels 15-11 in the season opener for both
teams. The game featured 26 runs and 33 hits between the two teams
but UNC Asheville used a four run seventh inning and a three run
eighth to pull away for the victory.
UNC Asheville (1-0) was led by Danny Batts who hit a grand slam in
the fourth inning and finished going 1-6 on the afternoon. Four
players had two RBI a piece for the Bulldogs including Justin
Schumer, Cody Buch, Robbie McIntosh, and Ian Graham
Campbell (0-1) was led by senior Bryan Braswell who started
off his senior campaign with a 4-5 night that included four RBI.
Junior Ellis Lowe also went 4-5 and
scored a couple of runs for the Fighting Camels.
Tyler Coyle earned the victory for the Bulldogs moving to 1-0 on
the season after pitching 1.1 innings while giving up just one
earned run and scattering three hits. Tyler Wohlwend recorded his
first save after pitching three innings of scoreless relief. Ben
Brown was dealt the loss (0-1) for Campbell as he pitched 2.2
innings and gave up four earned runs, scattering five hits.
UNC Asheville started the afternoon off scoring three runs in the
top of the 1st inning as Justin Schumer recorded the
first RBI of the 2010 season with a double to right field, scoring
Catlin Carter. UNC Asheville would score two more off of a Cody
Buch single to right field.
The Bulldogs continued the scoring in the fourth as Danny Baatz
would send a grand slam shot to deep center field to increase the
lead to 7-0.
Campbell answered in the bottom half of the inning as the Fighting
Camels exploded for five runs in the fourth. Alex
Aycoth got the inning started off with a RBI groundout to
shortstop scoring DJ Johnson. Zach
Johnson singled to continue the scoring with a single to right
scoring Ellis Lowe. Campbell worked
the bases loaded again and Bryan Braswell cleared them
as the Rocky Mount native sent a double off the wall in center
field to bring the score to 7-5.
The Bulldogs came back in the bottom half of the inning as Cody
Buch crossed home off of an error by DJ Johnson.
Campbell exploded yet again in the fifth as the Fighting Camels
reeled off six runs off of six hits. Doubles by Josh
Holskey, Bryan Braswell and Chaz
Sessoms scored five. Chris Bangi rounded out the
scoring as he singled scoring Colin Parker.
From that point on it was all UNC Asheville as they scored four
runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to finish out the
scoring for the game.
Jeff Rydman started the game
for the Fighting Camels as the senior from Gladstone, Mo. went 3.2
innings, allowing five runs, four of them being earned and
scattering six hits but was not a factor in the decision.
Campbell will be back in action against UNC Asheville on Saturday
afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
