MACON, GA. -- Game two was the best of both worlds for the Camels
as Logan Davis pitched a
complete game, while giving up just two earned runs; and Alan Denman belted a
pair of home runs to lead Campbell past Mercer in the later part of
the twinbill, 12-5. Campbell dropped the first contest by a 7-3
score.
In game one the score
stayed tied at one apiece until the fourth inning when Nick DiMauro
crossed the plate following a wild pitch from Campbell starter Frank
Zier.
In the fifth Mercer
increased their lead following a DiMauro RBI single to center field
that scored Joe Winker from second. John Moreland did more to
increase the lead as he sent a dinger to right field that scored
two to push the score to 5-1.
Mercer (11-5) pushed
ahead to a 7-1 mark as Winker sent an offering from Ryan Mattes to deep
right center that brought around Michael Langley to score.
Moreland racked up his third RBI off of a single that brought
around Winker to score.
Campbell (9-5) closed
the final margin by two as the Fighting Camels pushed two across
home plate in the top of the eighth. Zach Johnson was responsible
for bringing both of those runs home as he sent an offering from
David Teasley to left field for his third home run of the
season.
Frank Zier was
credited with the loss as the sophomore went four innings while
scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs. Zier falls to
2-2 on the season with the decision.
Brandon Love stayed
undefeated on the season and moved to 4-0 on the campaign while
pitching seven scoreless innings for the Bears while giving up just
five hits for the outing.
In game two it was
all Fighting Camels as Campbell scored three in the top of the
first and two in the top of the second to push ahead 5-0. Alex
Aycoth sent a single to left field that brought around Zach
Johnson and Alan
Denman to score for the first two runs of the nightcap. Later
in the inning it was DJ Johnson that sent a
single to center field that brought around Aycoth.
In the second
Campbell kept up the offense as Alan
Denman sent one of his two home runs to center field to score
two.
Mercer answered with
a run of their own in the third but Campbell bounced back with a
four run fourth inning off of an RBI single by Ellis
Lowe and a three RBI round tripper from the bat of Denman.
The Bears scored
another run in the bottom half of the inning but Campbell increased
their lead to 12-2 following a run scored in the fifth and a two
spot in the sixth, which wrapped up the scoring for the Camels in
game two.
In the ninth Mercer
scored three unearned runs off of Logan Davis following an
error from Noah
Zipko and a dropped ball from Alan
Denman to bring the final margin to 12-5.
Denman led the
Fighting Camel offensive attack as the junior posted a 2-for-5
night with five RBI. Alex Aycoth and DJ
Johnson both recorded two RBI apiece to help boost the run
support.
Logan
Davis picked up his fourth win of the season and keeps his
undefeated record (3-0) in tact as the senior went the
complete nine innings, gave up eleven hits, and just two earned
runs. The complete game marks the longest outing in Davis' career
as well as the first complete game posted by a Fighting Camel
since Ryan Hamme went the complete nine on March 21, 2009 against
ETSU.
The Fighting Camels
were able to knock around starter Matt McCall, who entered the
contest with a team low 2.55 ERA, for four hits and four earned
runs in just 1.1 innings pitched.
Campbell will
be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Mercer as they will
complete the three game conference set. The series finale will
mark the first regular season baseball contest to be played on a
Sunday in Campbell history. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from
Claude Smith Field.
