BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Ellis Lowe hit his
first career grand slam, to deep left field, in the third inning to
push Campbell ahead 9-0, and never looked back to defeat #21 East
Carolina, 12-5, at Taylor Field on Tuesday night.
This marks the first
time that Campbell has defeated East Carolina at home since 2000
and the Camels have now won two out of three. This win also marks
the first win in three weeks at home. Campbell improved to 19-19
on the season with the win as the Pirates fall to 24-13 on the
season.
Campbell started
where they left off against USC Upstate as they pounded East
Carolina for nine runs in the first three innings. Josh
Holskey notched the first RBI for the Fighting Camels as he
slapped a single through the left side to score Ellis
Lowe from third.
In the second
Campbell scored four more runs as DJ Johnson came up with a
clutch hit with two outs as the senior sent an 0-2 offering from
Joseph Hughes to left field to score Blake
Boyce. Later in the inning Zach Johnson singled up the
middle to register two RBI and keep the two out rally going. Next
up was Josh Holskey and he
collected his second RBI as he sent a double down the left field
line to score Alex Aycoth.
In the third inning
it was the aluminum of Ellis Lowe that made the
difference as the junior sent the first offering from ECU reliever
D.J. Jauss to deep left field to score four runs and push Campbell
to a 9-0 advantage.
The scoring stayed
silent until the fifth inning when ECU scored for the first time as
Zach Wright sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Trent
Whitehead.
ECU pushed closer in
the seventh as Jonathon Lopez got Trent Whitehead and John Wooten
to fly out to center to get two quick outs. After giving up a
single through the right side to Kyle Roller, Lopez struck out Zach
Wright but he reached following a passed ball. That gave the
Pirates a little light and they used it as Devin Harris sent an
RBI single to shortstop. Later in the inning Wright crossed the
plate following an error by Kevin Nelson.
Campbell answered
with three runs in the bottom of the eighth and pushed the lead
back to 12-3. Zach Johnson scored on a
throwing error by Lance Honeycutt. Cameron
Nelson continueld the scoring with a RBI single to right field
and DJ Johnson registered an RBI
as he reached on a throwing error by shortstop John Wooten but Alex
Aycoth came around to score.
The Pirates scored a
couple more runs as Devin Harris registered a couple of RBI
following a single to left field.
Ellis
Lowe led the offensive attack for the Fighting Camels as
the junior went 3-for-5, with four RBI as he, Josh
Holskey, Zach Johnson, Blake Boyce, and Cameron
Nelson all collected multiple hits for the Camels.
Ben Brown registered
the win for the Camels as the righty went six innings, while giving
up just one earned run off of seven hits. The outing was the
longest outing of the year for the junior as he moved to 3-3 on the
season.
It was rough from the
onset for ECU starter Joseph Hughes. Hughes gave up eight runs,
seven earned, off of seven hits in 2.1 innings of work. Hughes
falls to 1-1 on the season.
Campbell will be back
in action against Atlantic Sun rival East Tennessee State on Friday
and Saturday. The action will start on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and
will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
