DURHAM, N.C. - Campbell kept the offense going scoring 23 runs over
14 innings of play as they defeated North Carolina Central by
scores of 13-8 and 10-1 on Saturday afternoon at historic Durham
Athletic Park.
All nine of Campbell's starters knocked a hit and six of the nine
crossed the plate as Campbell defeated Central, 13-8, in game one
of the doubleheader.
Campbell put up five runs in the third inning to blow open what was
a scoreless ballgame. Cameron
Nelson, Chris Bangi, DJ
Johnson, Ellis Lowe and Zach
Johnson all collected doubles and with Bangi's hit he extended
his streak of reaching base safely to all 41 games that he has
played in.
In the fourth the Diamond Camels increased its lead to 9-0 as four
runners were plated off of four hits and two NC Central errors. DJ
Johnson and Lowe both collected their second double of the
contest during the inning. Alex Aycoth and Lowe both
tallied RBI in the stanza.
NC Central made things interesting as the Eagles pushed across four
runners off of five hits, which neutralized the scoring attack put
on by Campbell in earlier half of the frame. Nate Smith, Anthony
Wilson and Edward Pegues all registered RBI for the Eagles.
Campbell crossed the plate four more times in the seventh to take a
13-4 lead. Aycoth, Holskey, Chaz Sessoms all collected
hits and Noah
Zipko, Sessoms and Bryce Grady collected RBI in
the inning.
The Eagles put up four runs in the seventh to pull the game to the
final score of 13-8. Justin Goodson knocked an RBI as he reached
on a fielder's choice, Smith knocked his second RBI of the contest
as he sent another double to right field. Derrell Parker slammed a
two RBI double to left center field to score the last two runs for
the Eagles in the game.
Ben
Brown (4-3) picked up the win as he tossed four innings giving
up four runs off of six hits.
In the nightcap
Campbell threatened early as they loaded the bases with two
outs. Eagle starting pitcher Douglas Dalley hit Lowe, walked both
Aycoth and Zach Johnson before getting
Alan
Denman to pop up to first to end the frame.
NC Central took
advantage of the opportunity as they took an early 1-0 lead in the
first off of an RBI single to right field off the bat from Derrell
Parker.
From the first stanza
on it was all Fighting Camel pitching as they shut down the Eagle
offensive attack, at one point retiring 15 straight batters.
Campbell starter Frank
Zier (4-5) allowed just two hits in his five innings of work
and gave up none after the first to pick up the victory.
Campbell didn't allow
the Eagles to keep that lead for long as the Camels exploded for
five runs in the third off of a two RBI round tripper from Alex
Aycoth as well as RBI doubles from Kevin Nelson and Bryan
Braswell.
In the fourth the
Camels tacked on another score as Cameron
Nelson sent a shot to right field to push Campbell ahead
6-1.
The Camels scored
another run in the fifth as Aycoth walked, advanced to third
following a passed ball and a wild pitch. Aycoth was brought
around to touch the dish as Denman grounded into a 6-4-3 double
play.
The margin was pushed
to 9-1 following a double steal that brought home Cameron Nelson and a
fielding error by starting NCCU first baseman Nate Smith allowed
Bangi to touch home.
The final run for the
Camels touched home in the top of the seventh as Noah Zipko sent a
sacrifice fly to center field to bring around Colin
Parker to score.
NC Central was only
able to get three hits in the contest, all of them singles, off the
bats of Goodson, Parker and Nate Smith.
The Fighting Camels
will return to action next weekend as they entertain Longwood in a
three game set at Taylor Field. Friday's game is slated for a 6:00
p.m. first pitch with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday at 1:00
p.m.
