Baseball Completes 4-Game Sweep of Hartford

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell completed a four-game series sweep over visiting Hartford with 9-1 and 10-1 wins on Sunday at Jim Perry Stadium.

Campbell improves to 6-1 on the season while Hartford slides to an 0-4 start.

The Camels combined to outscore the Hawks 46-7 in the series, hitting .357 as a team, while holding UH to a .188 clip.

The Camels picked up a 9-1 win in game one of the doubleheader behind 7.0 innings of 2-hit ball from Matt Marksberry and three RBI from Michael Felton.

Marksberry allowed one unearned run in the win, walking four and striking out seven. Coley Thompkins and Paul Eyster bridged the gap for the Camels with two shutout innings.

Hartford's Ryan Carter was charged with the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, with a walk and a strikeout in an inning pitched. Kyle Gauthier pitched 5.0 innings, scattering four hits, four runs, all earned, with a walk and four strikeouts.

Felton, a senior from Tempe, Ariz., went 2-for-5 with a home run, adding a pair of runs scored. Ben McQuown scored a pair of runs after being hit by three pitches in the game.

McQuown, Elijah Trail, David Olson, Ben Fish and Aaron Vogt all added RBI for the Camels in the win.

The Camels plated four in the first inning despite not recording a hit. Campbell added a single run in the fourth, fifth and eighth, while Felton's homer gave the Camels two in the sixth.

Brady Sheetz paced Hartford with two hits in game one.

In game two, Jesse Simmons and Brent Graham registered three hits and two RBI each to lead the Camels to a 10-1 victory. McQuown and Clayton Brown also collected two hits in the game two rout.

Sophomore right-hander Heath Bowers moved to 1-0 on the season with the win, going 5.0 frames with five hits, a run, a walk and four strikeouts. Senior Logan Self pitched a scoreless sixth, allowing one hit and striking out one, while junior Ryan Thompson pitched a perfect seventh with two punchouts.

Ryan Lukach took the game two loss to fall to 0-1, scattering five runs on seven hits with two walks in 3.0 innings.

Freshman outfielder Jesse Simmons led the Camels in the series, batting .700 (7-10) with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple and three RBI. Felton knocked in a team-high seven with six runs scored, hitting .375 (6-16), while Nick Ray batted .429 (6-14) with five RBI, four runs scored and a double.

McQuown hit .455 (5-11) with seven stolen bases and eight runs.

Campbell heads to Duke on Wednesday, Feb. 27 for its next outing, taking on the Blue Devils at 3:15 p.m. The Camels will return home on March 1, welcoming Lafayette in a three-game set.
