Baseball Takes Big South Opener at Gardner-Webb 7-1

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Ben McQuown and Michael Felton both picked up two hits and scored twice while Ryan Mattes picked up his fourth win of the year to lead visiting Campbell past Gardner-Webb 7-1 in the Big South opener for both teams at JH Moss Stadium.

Campbell moves to 15-2 overall and 1-0 in Big South play with the win, while GWU dips to 11-6-1 and 0-1 this season. The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start at JH Moss Stadium.

Nick Ray and Michael DeLucia each added two hits and a run apiece, with DeLucia picking up a RBI. McQuown and Felton each went 2-for-5 on the night.

McQuown led off the game with a standup triple, then scored on a passed ball to give the Camels the early 1-0 lead.

After a David Olson walk and a Ray double to right-center in the fourth, DeLucia singled up the middle to score one for the Camels. Trevor Lane's squeeze scored Ray, making it 3-0 Camels. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, DeLucia scored on an error, giving Campbell at 4-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb scored one in the home half of the fourth when Hodge singled in Rundio.

Campbell added another run in the fifth with Felton scoring on a Bulldog error after reaching with a double down the left field line.

In the top of the seventh, McQuown led off with a base hit, then scored on a Trail RBI single through the left side to give Campbell a 6-1 lead. Felton added another run in the top of the ninth, scoring on a Bulldog error to go ahead 7-1.

Ryan Mattes (4-1) pitched six frames in the win, scattering a run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks…has two quality starts this season. Logan Self earned the three inning save, allowing a hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Matt Fraudin (3-2) tossed seven innings for the Bulldogs, allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in the loss.

Stephen Gilmore pitched an inning in relief, allowing a hit. Brock Wilson allowed an unearned run in an inning on one hit with a strikeout.

Tyler Best posted two hits to pace the Bulldogs at the plate.

After the GWU series, Campbell returns home for a two-game midweek set against Rider, March 19-20.
