BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Erik Heiligenstadt's complete game shutout led Gardner-Webb past Campbell 4-0, evening the Big South series at one game apiece Saturday at JH Moss Stadium.
Gardner-Webb improves to 12-6-1 and 1-1 in Big South games, while Campbell dips to 15-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The series will conclude Sunday at 2 p.m.
Heiligenstadt moved to 3-0 on the year, allowing four hits with four strikeouts and three walks, holding the Camels scoreless for the first time all season.
Matt Marksberry (3-1) pitched four innings for the Camels, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Hector Cedano tossed four frames, allowing two hits with two walks and five punchouts.
Scott Coleman paced GWU at the plate with a 2-for-4 day, scoring twice, while Benji Jackson drove in two, going 1-for-2 with two walks. Scott Jackson also went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks for the Bulldogs.
After Marksberry held Gardner-Webb without a hit through two innings, the Bulldogs scored two in the third, with JJ Nazzaro crossing the plate on a passed ball and Coleman coming home on a Brad Collins double.
The Bulldogs added another pair in the fifth on a Jackson two-RBI single, putting GWU ahead 4-0.
Junior Clayton Brown led Campbell with two hits. Michael Felton and Elijah Trail also registered hits for the Camels on the day.
After the GWU series, Campbell returns home for a two-game midweek set against Rider, March 19-20.
