Baseball Sweeps Lafayette with 8-3, 7-2 Wins

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell earned its second-straight weekend series sweep of the season, taking both games of a doubleheader against Lafayette Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium. The Camels (10-1) defeated the Leopards (0-6) 8-3 in the first game and 7-2 in the nightcap, earning their ninth-consecutive win.

The Camels took the first game of the two-game tilt 8-3, as senior Ben McQuown hit his third home run of the season and CU stole six bases.

Campbell recorded the first four runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning. McQuown batted in Jesse Simmons on a single for his first RBI of the day. Senior Brent Graham doubled in two runs before classmate Michael Felton hit a single to score Graham for the fourth run.

Lafayette got on the board in the sixth inning, cutting the score to 4-2. Thomas Dunleavy batted in Andrew Landolfi on a fielder's choice. The second run of the inning was an Andrew Antomauro score on a balk.

CU answered in the bottom inning with two runs of its own, as Clayton Brown drove in Michael DeLucia and McQuown blasted his third homer of the season.

The final Leopard score of the game came in the top of the seventh, as Landolfi singled in Alex Nickles.

The Camels scored their last two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Nick Ray hit a single to bring in junior Elijah Trail and DeLucia batted in Ray on a single.

Redshirt junior Matt Marksberry picked up his second win on the season, moving to 2-0 after throwing 6.2 innings with six hits, three runs, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Junior Ryan Thompson earned his team-leading third save on the season, pitching 2.1 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

CU's eight runs were scored on 12 hits with eight RBI.

In the final game of the series, Campbell posted seven runs on seven hits to win 7-2.

Lafayette took a two-run lead in the fourth to hold its first lead of the series. Campbell responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and never gave up the lead.

Senior David Olson brought in Graham on a single to put the first Camel run across. Graham and Felton both scored on Fish's two-RBI single, giving Campbell the 3-2 advantage.

Campbell held Lafayette scoreless for the remainder of the game, while posting four more runs to clinch the sweep.

Heath Bowers, a sophomore from Lillington, N.C., improved to 2-0 on the year after throwing seven innings with four hits, two runs, one earned and five strikeouts.

Thompson made his second appearance of the day on the mound, pitching two innings with one hit and four strikeouts.

The Camels are back in action Wednesday at North Carolina State, taking on the Wolfpack at noon.
