Boyce's Grand Slam Powers No. 29 Camels Over UNCG 10-7

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Blake Boyce's pinch hit grand slam in the bottom of the eighth lifted No. 29 Campbell over visiting UNC Greensboro 10-7 Wednesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Campbell moves to 37-8 on the season with its sixth straight win, while UNCG falls to 18-23 overall.

Boyce, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., pinch hit after the Spartans intentionally walked Michael DeLucia to load the bases with one out in the eighth. On a 1-0 pitch, Boyce belted the round tripper to left off of UNCG's Dylan Hathcock, the first home run of the senior's career, to put the Camels ahead 10-7.

Boyce also came up with a bottom of the ninth RBI double last Friday in the VMI series opener, lifting the Camels to a 2-1 win.

Campbell came into the home half of the eighth trailing 7-5 before three straight singles from Brent Graham, Michael Felton and David Olson loaded the bases to lead off the rally. Elijah Trail's sacrifice fly made it 7-6 Spartans before DeLucia's intentional walk and Boyce's slam.

The Camels took their first lead of the night in the third when Nick Ray drew a bases loaded walk after Graham knocked in Ben McQuown, putting the Camels ahead 3-2.

The Spartans answered with a four run spurt with two outs in the fourth, as Christian Wolfe's base clearing triple made it 6-3.

Campbell chipped away with RBI hits from Felton and Olson in the fourth and sixth before UNCG added a run in the seventh on Eric Kalbfleisch's RBI fielder's choice.

Ryan Thompson, who pitched the game's final two frames, moved to 5-0 with the win, allowing a hit while fanning one. Campbell starter Ryan Mattes allowed six runs, five earned, one seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work.

Logan Self pitched 1 1/3, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk, while David Olson walked one in 2/3 of an inning.

Hathcock was charged with the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season after surrendering five runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in an inning. Brennen James, the Spartan starter, went two innings with a run on four hits, striking out two.

The Spartans used seven hurlers on the night.

Felton ended the night with his second four hit game of the year, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a RBI, posting a pair of doubles. Graham was 3-for-4 in the win, knocking in one and scoring once. Olson also registered a pair of hits, while McQuown scored twice.

Wolfe paced UNCG with three RBI, while Lloyd Enzor, Benigno Marrero and Kalbfleisch also picked up two hits each.

After breaking for exams, the Camels will return to the diamond on May 3, beginning a three game series at High Point. Campbell returns home on May 10 for a three game set with Liberty.
