CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Skye Bolt and Michael Russell tallied three hits each while Zac Gallen struck out six to lead North Carolina over Campbell Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.
North Carolina improved to 29-19 on the season with the win, while Campbell falls to 31-16 overall.
Steven Leonard and Matt Parrish both went 2-for-4 for the Camels, while Matt Nadolski roped a double in the third to pace the Camels at the plate. John Reilly also picked up a hit for the Camels in the loss.
Bolt and Russell both knocked in and scored a run, two of five different Tar Heels with a RBI. Parks Jordan also went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Gallen (5-3) pitched six innings to earn the win, allowing five hits with a walk.
Trevor Kelley was credited with a three inning save, allowing a hit with a walk while striking out three.
Campbell starter Bobby Thorson (2-5) was charged with the loss, going four innings with three runs on six hits, two strikeouts and two walks.
John Allen allowed a run without surrendering a hit, walking two in 1 1/3 in relief. Coley Thompkins allowed a run on two hits.
Ryan Thompson fanned four in 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits to close out the game.
UNC broke through in the third with a Ramirez sacrifice fly, followed by a Jordan RBI base hit.
Zengel added a third Tar Heel run two innings later with a sacrifice fly.
Three UNC base hits and two Campbell errors led to two more runs for the Tar Heels in the sixth, with Bolt and Lassiter knocking in runs to make it 5-0.
Campbell threatened in the sixth with its first three batters reaching on two base hits and a walk, but two Camels were thrown out stealing to end the rally.
CU also left two men on in the first and the seventh.
The loss was Campbell's first at an ACC member this season. The Camels own previous wins at North Carolina State and Virginia Tech.
CU continues its Big South schedule at VMI next weekend, May 9-11, before wrapping up its home slate with UNC Wilmington on May 13.
