Kindt's golden goal leads Camels past Eagles

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell senior Christine Kindt notched the game-winning golden goal in the second overtime period of the match, giving Campbell (8-6-0, 3-2-0 Big South) a 3-2 win over the Winthrop Eagles (3-8-0, 0-3-0 Big South) Friday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Kindt's goal was assisted by senior midfielder Payton Ormsby, who tallied a career-high three assists on the night. Senior midfielder Kine Thorsvik and Kindt recorded a pair of Campbell goals in the first half, giving the senior class all the points scored for CU on the night.

"[The seniors] really carried us tonight," said head coach Stuart Horne. "Goals aside, there's a lot of stuff they did off the ball, too, that helped keep the team going. They just really stepped up for us, especially in that second half. The seniors just brought our team to another level. The stat sheet obviously shows that, but they really kept our team going tonight."

Kindt's game-winner came in the third minute of the second overtime period. Ormsby took a shot that was deflected by an Eagle defender, and Kindt came in to knock it in off the deflection from about six yards out. The Camels also saw a close chance at the golden goal in the first overtime period as freshman forward Rosie O'Neal narrowly missed a sliding goal off a cross from Thorsvik.

Trailing 2-0 late in the first half, Winthrop sparked a comeback as Courtney McLeod knocked a loose ball in the box into the net, making the score 2-1 less than a minute before the break. The teams battled back and forth in the second half, and Winthrop notched the equalizer in the 83rd minute. Olivia Costello connected on her first goal of the season off a long cross from Keeley Leising to send the match to extra time.

The Camels came out quick to start the match, as Thorsvik notched her fourth goal of the year in the second minute of play. Ormsby headed a ball upfield, and Thorsvik was able to get past the Winthrop defense and put the ball inside the left post. Typically a midfielder for the Camels, Thorsvik started the match at forward for CU, and was able to use her speed to score early.

"When we were discussing lineup, Samar [Azem] had a great plan to start Kine up top," Horne said of the decision. "Based on the factors of the quick turnaround, the situations for both teams and the potential weather, putting Kine up top, her and Alexa [Genas] together going forward, it could maybe create some quick, early chances for us. Sure enough, it was a brilliant tactical plan and two minutes into the game, Kine gets a nice goal. That was the idea for putting her up front."

Holding a 1-0 advantage, Kindt increased the Campbell lead on a beautiful strike from about 35 yards out off of the Ormsby assist. Kindt now has five goals on the season, which is tied for the team lead. Coach Horne likes the confidence that he has seen on the attack from his senior midfielder.

"This year, Christine has definitely put herself in positions to get more looks," Horne said. "She's a lot more confident with those opportunities, and taking those chances. She's scored some really good goals, and even some of her misses are really, really good, just unfortunate misses."

Up next, the Fighting Camels will travel to Radford, Va. to take on the conference-unbeaten Radford Highlanders. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 12 at the Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell women's soccer, follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
