BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Nick Thayer tossed seven innings of one-hit ball and Matt Parrish drove in three, leading Campbell to a 7-0 opening day win over visiting Miami (Ohio) at Jim Perry Stadium.
Thayer (1-0), a senior right-hander from Overland Park, Kan., pitched seven frames in the win, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out eight in his Friday night debut. Newcomers Erik Dowse and Phil Stokes pitched an inning each to complete the shutout.
The trio combined for 11 punchouts.
Thayer didn't allow a baserunner until Chad Sedio walked on a 3-2 count with two away in the fourth. Hayden Senger recorded Miami's lone hit, leading off the sixth with a single up the middle.
The one-hitter is Campbell's (1-0) first since April 23, 2013, when current Atlanta Brave Matt Marksberry helped shutout visiting North Carolina Central.
Campbell won its season opener for the fifth straight season.
Brad Schwartz (0-1) took the loss for the RedHawks (0-1), pitching 5 2/3 innings with two runs, both earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Michael Hendricks was also tagged for five runs, four earned, on three hits in 1/3 of an inning, while Nick Scheller pitched two scoreless stanzas.
Parrish, a senior from McGee's Crossroads, N.C., went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single in the seventh, also scoring a run.
Brian Taylor, Zach Minnick and JD Andreessen all knocked in runs for the Camels, while Taylor and Cole Hallum both scored twice in the win.
Parrish's RBI base hit and Andreessen's sacrifice fly put Campbell on the board in the second before a five-run eruption in the home half of the seventh, aided by two Miami errors and three CU hits.
The series continues tomorrow with a 3 p.m. first pitch. Sunday's series finale will be a 2 p.m. start.
