CONWAY, S.C. – Connor Owings went 4-for-4 and scored three times to lead No. 20 Coastal Carolina over visiting Campbell 9-1 Thursday at Springs Brooks Stadium, taking game one of the Big South series.
The Chanticleers move to 38-15 overall and 19-3 in Big South play, while Campbell falls to 26-25 on the season and 13-9 in conference games.
Owings singled in the first, third, sixth and eighth, also drawing a walk in the fifth for CCU.
Zach Remillard also went 1-for-3 with two runs, knocking in a pair on a first inning home run, his 15th of the season. Coastal scored in each of the first six frames to go ahead 8-1 in the win.
Coastal starter Alex Cunningham (8-3) picked up the win, going six innings with a run on two hits. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk, retiring his first 13 batters.
Drew Butler picked up Campbell's first hit of the night with one out in the fifth.
Andrew Beckwith earned a three inning save, his second, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and a walk.
Nick Thayer (8-6) took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
Alex Yarem pitched two innings in relief for the Camels, allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Anthony Lopez put Campbell on the board in the sixth with a RBI double, scoring Junior Snow from first, who reached on a hit by pitch. Lopez was 1-for-3 on the night.
The series continues with a 6 p.m. start Friday, and a 2 p.m. Saturday finale.
