Radford comeback edges Camels 8-5

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Radford scored six runs over its final two innings to clip Campbell 8-5 Friday at Jim Perry Stadium, and claim the Big South series.

The Highlanders (15-19, 5-6 Big South) trailed 5-2 heading into the eighth inning before a four run outburst gave RU the 6-5 lead. Two Campbell errors, along with two Radford hits, including a Spencer Horwitz RBI single, resulted in the four run frame.

Radford added two in the top of the ninth on a Danny Hrbek RBI single and a Campbell error, extending the lead to 8-5.

Campbell fell to 16-19 overall and 5-6 in Big South play with the loss.

Evan Threehouse (1-0) picked up the win, pitching three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts, scattering three hits. Kyle Zurak earned the save, his fifth of the season, allowing just a hit in two innings with two strikeouts.

RU starter Danny Hrbek allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings.

Wyatt Tyson (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Campbell starter Alex Yarem allowed an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walk in five innings.

Allan Winans surrendered three runs on two hits with four strikeouts and a walk in two innings of relief. Erik Dowse retired two of his three batters.

Campbell built a 5-1 lead in the fifth, with Drew Butler's bases loaded triple breaking open a 1-1 game. Butler's triple cleared the bases and Matthew Barefoot followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 Camels. Kyle Mehl drove home the game's first run in the second with a two out single.

Butler went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run for the Camels, while Mehl went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run.

Hrbek was 2-for-4 at the plate for Radford, driving in a run and scoring twice, while Matt Roth picked up two RBI, going 1-for-5.

The Camels and Highlanders will wrap up their three game Big South series Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Camels travel to North Carolina Central on Tuesday, April 18, returning to Jim Perry Stadium for a three game Big South series against UNC Asheville April 21-23.
