WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Lawrence Kipkoech set a second school record in as many weeks to highlight Campbell's second day of competition at the Camel City Invitational on Saturday at the JDL FastTrack.
Kipkoech ran a program record of 7:57.67 in the 3000m in the Camel City Elite race, breaking
Amon Terer's record of 7:59.92, which he set at the same meet in 2017. His time is the tenth fastest time in the nation this year and is the third fastest in the history of the Big South.
He last set a school record on Jan. 20, running a time of 4:06.34 in the mile at the Keydet Invitational to break Chris Schulist's record of 4:08.11.
On day two in Winston-Salem, Campbell competed in seven different events, including five individual events and two relays. CU picked up six top-10 finishes over the course of the closing day of competition at the Camel City Invitational.
DISTANCE
Kipkoech and
Amon Kemboi closed out the meet in the Camel City Elite 3000m, running against some of the best distance runners in the collegiate and professional ranks. Kipkoech's time of 7:57.67 broke his lifetime best and earned him a fifth place finish, while Kemboi clocked in at 8:03.96 to place eighth.
SPRINTS/RELAYS
Khai McLin ran a time of 22.29s in the 200m to finish sixth among all competitors at the JDL FastTrack. This is his second fastest time of the 2017-18 season, as he clocked in at 22.09s at the Keydet Invitational two weeks ago.
Chigozie Atavwigho competed in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles on Saturday afternoon, running a time of 8.57s to place 20th.
Marcus Mize ran a season-best time of 9.25s for the Fighting Camels.
CU fielded teams for the men's and women's distance medley relay for the first time this season. The men's team, which consisted of
Kelvin Kirui,
Trevon Compito,
Graeme Fisher and
Ronald Cheserek, crossed the finish line in a time of 10:18.68 to place third.
The women's relay team (
Shanley Koekemoer,
Faith Lee,
Roshae Jackson and
Michaela Louw) clocked in at 12:09.65 to finish third.
JUMPS
Noah Tyson made his season-debut for the Fighting Camels on Saturday morning, competing in the triple jump in Winston-Salem. Tyson picked up a fifth place finish with a best mark of 13.94m.
THROWS
Andrew Ward posted a best throw of 12.66m in the shot put in the Camel City Invitational to finish in 25th place among all competitors. That mark is just 0.11m off of his best collegiate throw of 12.66m, which he set at the UNCG Early Bird Duals on Dec. 3.
