COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sabina Allen became the first female All-American in Campbell track & field history, picking up first team honors in the triple jump at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on Saturday.
"Sabina did not disappoint and proved she belonged at this meet," said head coach
Michael Kelly. "What an amazing end to her outstanding indoor senior season! Coach
T.J. Harris has done an outstanding job getting Sabina to improve year after year. I can't wait to see what he and Sabina have in store for us this outdoor season."
"Sabina rose to the challenge in a big way," said Harris. "From the start of the competition, it was more than clear that qualifying to the finals was not going to be an easy task. The atmosphere was electric and she fed off of it all the way until her final jump."
Allen posted a final mark of 13.61m in the triple jump to finish in fifth place. This is the second best overall finish in an event at the NCAA Championships, only following
Amon Terer's third place finish in the 5000m at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Spanish Town, Jamaica, native joins
Amon Kemboi (2018),
Amon Terer (2017) and Eric Bergemann (2003) as the only first team All-America honors in Campbell history.
Allen opened up the competition with a mark of 12.70m on her first jump. On her second attempt, Allen had a lifetime best mark of 13.45m to move into fourth place and qualify for the finals. On her final jump of the finals, Allen posted a mark of 13.61m, breaking her own school and conference record.
Georgia's Keturah Orji won the triple jump title, posting a mark of 14.27m to break the meet and facility record. Florida's Yanis David and UCLA's Jessie Maduka and Jhoanmy Luque were the only other athletes to out-jump Allen.
Lawrence Kipkoech picked up his second All-America honors of the weekend, placing 12th in the 3000m with a time of 8:11.28 to earn second team accolades. Northern Arizona's Andy Trouard won the individual title, clocking in at 8:04.94 to beat out Syracuse's Justyn Knight (8:05.76).
"Lawrence did an awesome job positioning himself up front throughout the race, but he just needed a little more speed for that last 400m," said Kelly.
Kipkoech joins Terer as the only Campbell athlete to win four career All-America honors. Previously, Kipkoech earned second team honors in the 10,000m at the 2015 and 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Allen, Kemboi and Kipkoech will rejoin the Camels for the outdoor season, with the next scheduled meet being the 49ers Classic in Charlotte, N.C., on next Friday and Saturday. For the latest information about Campbell track & field, follow
