Campbell (29-21) clinched the 2018 Big South regular season title with a 5-0 victory over the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday, May 13. The Camels own a 19-5 record in conference play, good for a three-game lead over second-place High Point with three Big South games remaining in the regular season.
Wes Noble tossed his first career complete game shutout in Sunday's win, earning Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week honors as the senior right-hander allowed just two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks against the Eagles. After giving up a one-out double in the top of the third, Noble went on to retire 20-straight Winthrop batters to seal the win.
Senior outfielder
Jeff Hahs also took home Big South weekly honors, as the O'Fallon, Ill. native was named the conference's Player of the Week. Hahs led the Camels with two homers, two doubles, seven runs scored and a .762 slugging percentage over the last five games.
For the season, redshirt sophomore
Matthew Barefoot tops the Campbell lineup in 10 offensive categories: batting average (.333), on-base percentage (.471), runs scored (43), hits (59), doubles (12), triples (3), walks (27), HBP (21), steals (25) and total plate appearances (228). His .471 on-base percentage ranks 39th in all of NCAA Division I, while the 21 HBP sit sixth in the nation and the 25 steals rank 24th.
Christian Jones is tied for the Big South lead in home runs (14) and RBI (50). The senior infielder is Campbell's top slugger at .533 for the season, while he also owns a team-high .292 batting average in non-conference games.
CU's pitching staff leads the Big South with a program-record 456 strikeouts this season. The Camels also top the league in team ERA (4.38), opposing batting average (.239) and wins (29). Campbell's 9.16 K's per nine innings are on pace to shatter the school record of 8.24 set in 2000.
East Carolina (37-13) picked up an American Athletic Conference series win last weekend, edging Cincinnati 2-1 with back-to-back victories on Saturday and Sunday. The Pirates have won seven of their last eight games heading into Tuesday's matchup with the Camels.
ECU's 3.23 team ERA ranks 14th in the country, while the Pirates' 2.84 strikeout-to-walk ratio sits 16th in all of NCAA Division I. Bryant Packard is ECU's top offensive threat with a team-high 69 hits, 12 home runs, 44 RBI and a .404 batting average that leads the American.Â
This will be the second game between the Camels and the Pirates in 2018. The two squads faced each other nearly three months ago in Buies Creek, as an unranked ECU squad defeated Campbell 7-2 on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Following the contest, the Camels will close the regular season with a Big South series at Radford. The three-game set is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19 at the Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium in Radford, Va.
