Heino brothers head to European Championships

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jere and Ville Heino will both compete in the 2018 European Championships in Kaspiisk, Russia.

Both will be competing for their native Finland, with action beginning at 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. Eastern U.S.) on Saturday, May 5 at the Ali Aliev Palace of Youth and Sport.

Ville Heino, a 2017 Campbell graduate, will be competing at 86kg, drawing Germany's Ahmed Ruslanovic Dudarov in the first round. The winner of the bout faces the winner of Aleksandr Gostiyev (Azerbaijan), who finished fifth at the 2017 World Championships, and Mehmed Remzi Gazi (Bulgaria) in the quarterfinals.

Jere Heino, a rising Campbell senior and two-time NCAA qualifier, will wrestle at 125kg, taking on Danylo Kartavyi (Ukraine), the 2017 U23 World Championships bronze medalist, in the first round. The winner of the bout faces the winner of Muradin Kushkhov (Russia), the Yarygin Grand Prix Champion, and Alexandr Romanov (Moldova) in the quarterfinals.

Heino was a 2017-18 All-Southern Conference pick at heavyweight, and won the 2018 SoCon Championship to qualify the Helsinki native for his second straight NCAA berth, where he finished in the top-12 in his weight class.
