LANCASTER, PA. – Eight Camels earned podium finishes Saturday at the David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open, including
Quentin Perez taking third at 165 pounds, while
Nathan Boston (141) and
Austin McNeill (197) both notched fourth place finishes, and
Caleb Hopkins claimed fifth at 174 pounds for Campbell.
Nathan Boston took fourth at 141 pounds. The redshirt senior started off with a forfeit win, then pinned Princeton's John Goettee (1:47), and topped Virginia's Scott Kiyono 4-3 before falling in a 3-0 decision to eventual champion Mitch Moore from Virginia Tech. Marshall Keller of Princeton came out on top in the third place match with a fall (4:48).
Austin McNeill placed fourth at 197 pounds, taking his first three bouts of the tournament. McNeill began with a 9-3 win over Binghamton's Alex Melikian, tacking on decisions over George Mason's Alex Donahue (3-0) and Millersville's Colton Dull (2-0). A 16-1 loss to Michael Beard placed the Campbell senior in the third place match, where he fell 13-6 to North Carolina's Brandon Whitman.
Including unattached wrestlers, five Camels competed at 165 pounds, with four winning their opening round bouts. Leading the group was unattached
Quentin Perez, who placed third. Perez kicked off the day with a 21-5 tech fall win over Virginia Tech's Jordan Florence, then tallied a 33 second pin over North Carolina State's Alexande Faison. The senior gathered a third bonus point win with an 18-3 tech fall over Princeton's Dale Tiongson. He then fell to F&M's Rick Durso 17-2, placing Perez into third.
Zach Barnes carried a 5-1 day at 157 pounds, starting with a pin over Maryland's Chase De Maille (3:11). A 14-6 major decision loss to Harvard's Hunter Ladnier sent the CU sophomore to the consolation bracket, where Barnes reeled off four straight victories, including an 18-1 tech fall over Delaware Valley's Chris Richardson, a fall over Franklin & Marshall's Noah Chan (2:00), a 20-6 major decision over Navy's Scout Skidgel and a fall over Pittsburgh's Riley Barth (3:21) before reaching his six match cap for the day. Barnes' fifth win of the tournament sent him to the 157 pound fifth place match, but both wrestlers had met their match limit, slotting Barnes fifth in the standings.
At heavyweight,
Odgerel Batkhishig rebounded from an opening round loss with five consecutive victories. Batkhishig topped Hofstra's Zachary Knighton-Ward 13-2, then pinned John Barlow from Kutztown (3:36). A 3-2 decision over Davidson's Mitchell Trigg matched the junior up with teammate
Laith Alsous, taking a 3-1 sudden victory over the redshirt freshman. Batkhishig pinned Pittsburgh's Cole Rickert (1:54) before reaching his sixth match limit and placing sixth.
After dropping their F&M Open 174 pound debuts Saturday, Campbell's
Caleb Hopkins and
Charlie Andrews both bounced back with consolation bracket runs.
Hopkins started with a quick 40 second fall over North Carolina's Grant Jefferson, and topped Gary Eakin 9-2. The freshman then defeated Kyle Hillermeier from Delaware Valley 9-1. He advanced to the fifth place match with a 5-3 decision over his teammate, Andrews, and downed Appalachian State's Joseph Accousti 8-4, taking fifth.
Andrews, meanwhile, defeated Malik Jackson from Millersville 3-1, and Pittsburgh's Tommy O`Brien 5-1 before taking on Hopkins and finishing eighth.
Cameron Pine and
Austin Murphy also collected three wins in the 165 bracket, including opening round pins.
Chris Kober also delivered three wins at 184 pounds.
Cole Maddox also took eighth place at 184 pounds.
Campbell will close out the nonconference portion of its schedule on January 12, taking on Franklin & Marshall in a neutral site dual in Richmond, Va. The Camels open Southern Conference action January 20 at Appalachian State.
