BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Headlined by
Alexa Genas being named the Attacking Player of the Year, a program-record seven Campbell players have received Big South All-Conference honors.
Genas, along with senior
Katie Lockwood, represent the Camels on the First Team All-Conference list followed by a trio of Camels on the second team in defenders
Delaney Baumbick and
Callie Beckwith as well as forward
Rosie O'Neal. Forward
Jessica Donald and midfielder
Elyssa Nowowieski round out the group as a member of the honorable mention team with Donald also being named to the All-Academic team.
"It's been a great season so far for us. Our conference is stacked with good players and a lot of parity this year," said Campbell head coach
Samar Azem. "I'm very proud of our entire team, every individual, including the staff I work with, for playing a part in our team's success so far this season. I'm excited for our players that are recognized and appreciative of the coaches in our conference for recognizing them."
Senior forward
Alexa Genas' Attacking Player of the Year honor marks the second of her career (2017) to make her the first player in program history to receive the honor twice and just the fifth player in Big South history to garner multiple annual Big South accolades.
"Alexa shows up every single day to train and play. She's an attacking threat and she's got a great killer instinct," continued Azem on Genas. "I am very proud of her for developing every aspect of her game. She's becoming an unpredictable threat for teams to manage and is at the top of the conference and country in not only goals but assists as well this year. She is exceptional in possession, she's incredible in duals and is very smart defensively. I am excited to see her continue to grow and drive forward."
Genas led the league in points (33), points per game (1.94), goals (12), goals per game (0.71), and game-winning goals (7) while ranking second in assists (9) and assists per game (0.53).
The Albuquerque, N.M. native also ranks in the top-25 nationally in all seven categories including the top mark in the nation in game-winning goals.
Genas closed out the regular season tied for fifth on the Big South's career goals list with 44 including 12 from this season. She is just two shy of tying Ashley Clark (46) for second on Campbell's all-time scoring list. Genas also sits tied for first in league history for game-winning goals with seven.
In her lone season with the Camels,
Katie Lockwood made an immediate impact on the offensive end where she netted nine goals and dished out seven assists to tally 25 points. Her goal total on the season ranks fourth in the league, while her assist total sits fifth and her point total in third.
Her 1.79 points per game rank 23
rd in the nation while her 0.50 assists per game rank 31
st.
"Katie has overcome a lot to have the season she's having and I'm beyond proud of her for it," commented Azem. "She quickly immersed herself into our program and style. She is very good in possession for us and in front of goal and brings a high soccer IQ to simplify our decisions moving the ball forward. She is such a smart and technical player and an absolute clinical finisher. I look forward to seeing how she continues to apply her tools."
The Huddersfield, U.K. native scored in seven different outings including a pair of two-goal performances in back-to-back wins over Mount St. Mary's (9/5), and Saint Peter's (9/8). Lockwood also scored the lone goal and game-winner against conference foe Radford (10/19).
Senior
Rosie O'Neal helped fuel the Campbell offensive attack this season by netting a season career-high six goals and assisting on three more totaling a season career-high 15 points.
"Rosie is the piano carrier that's been a very big part of our success this season. I am unbelievably happy that she is recognized for it. Defensively she's incredibly reliable, she's very good on the ball for us, she creates goals, and is bought into what makes her such a great player and absolutely runs with it. I'm excited to see her continue to grow."
The Virginia Beach native tallied a career-high four points on senior day in a 5-1 win over Hampton when she also netted a career-high two goals.
Senior defender
Callie Beckwith has been a staple in the Campbell backline all four seasons. This year she started in all 17 regular season matches totaling 1,433 minutes playing at least 90 minutes in 10 of those contests. Her defensive prowess on the backline helped Campbell post nine shutouts on the year which is just two shy of a program record.
"Callie is a player that typically goes unnoticed. In my opinion, Callie is one of the best defenders in the conference," said Azem. "Our back line was very solid this year and she was a big part of that. She's very good 1v1, she attacks well out of the back and has been incredibly reliable for us. I am happy for her to be recognized and can't wait to see what she continues to do."
Rookie defender
Delaney Baumbick shared the load on the backline starting in 13 of 17 games playing the full 90 minutes in five contests. She played a major role in Campbell's nine blank sheets on the year as well.
"Delaney has shown a lot of maturity as a young player," raved Azem. "She's a smart and tenacious defender and has done very well to show a high level of maturity in key possessions defensively. She was reliable in big games for us and has shown a high level of consistency in our backline. I look forward to seeing Delaney continue to grow and evolve."
In just her third game in the orange and black, the Cleveland, Ohio product dished out an assist in a 2-0 win over old Big South rival Coastal Carolina (8/29).
Fellow rookie
Elyssa Nowowieski played in all 17 games for the Camels, starting in 15. The midfielder played a key role on offense by netting three goals and assisting three more on the year to reach nine points.
"Elyssa is a fun player to watch. We put her in a new position this year and she did very well to learn it in a short amount of time. She has an incredible strike from distance with both feet, she's very good in the air, and she's talented on the ball. Her competitive and relentless mentality is a big reason she will continue to succeed and we are excited to see it."
Reigning from Baltimore, Md., Nowowieski scored in back-to-back wins against Gardner-Webb (10/2) and USC Upstate (10/5) to help Campbell close out the season on a seven-game win, eight-game unbeaten streak and to tie a program record for conference wins in a season with eight.
One of the nation's best at distributing the ball,
Jessica Donald dished out nine assists on the year to rank second in the league as well as in assists per game (0.53) which ranks 16
th and 24
th respectively nationally.
"Jessica is such a talented athlete. She is an attacking threat in wide areas and she's developed her game in multiple facets within her role. She is a very driven person and athlete and I am beyond proud of her for what she's accomplishing on the field and off the field. I think she has a lot left in store and I absolutely can't wait to see her continue to develop."
Donald also netted her lone goal of the season in a 2-0 win over UNC Asheville (9/21). The sophomore also garnered Big South All-Academic team honors for her work in the classroom where she posted a 3.93 GPA in mechanical engineering.
Campbell's record number of all-conference honors comes following Campbell setting a new Big South record for the most player of the week honors in a season with 10.
Alexa Genas tabbed attacking player of the week honors three times while
Katie Lockwood earned the recognition twice.
Reaghan Duval and
Callie Beckwith garnered defensive player of the week honors once, respectively while
