ProHumps season wrap up

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - With the 2021 MLB regular season wrapped up, take a look back at the eventful summers for our ProHumps:

Cedric Mullins, Baltimore Orioles
Mullins had a historic breakout season in Baltimore, being named an American League all-star and notching the first-ever 30-30 season by an Oriole. Mullins hit 30 HRs and swiped 30 bases to be the only player in the major leagues to accomplish the feat this season. He hit .291 for the year and compiled 174 hits, the ninth most in the league. Mullins also pieced together a 20-game hit streak from July 20 - Aug. 13, the third longest streak in the big leagues this year.

A member of the Camels in 2015, he became the third Camel to be named to an MLB all-star team (Jim and Gaylord Perry) and only the second all-star starter (Gaylord Perry).

Mullins was also named the 2021 Most Valuable Oriole by the team after his breakout year.

Ryan Thompson, Tampa Bay Rays
Thompson was putting together a solid second season in Tampa before being sidelined with an injury in late-June. Through June 27, Thompson had posted a 2.38 ERA and struck out 37 across 36 appearances and 34.0 IP.

A 2014 draft pick out of Campbell, Thompson initially went on the 10 day IL and made four rehab starts with the Durham Bulls before being shut down again. The righty underwent surgery on Sept. 30 and expects to be ready for spring training next season.

The Rays finished the regular season atop the AL East and own the third-best record in baseball. They host the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series beginning this weekend.

Matthew Barefoot, AA Corpus Christi (Houston Astros)
Barefoot had a huge year that saw him begin the season in low-A and reach AA by the end of the year.  Barefoot hit .344 in 16 games locally for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers to open the season before moving to High-A Asheville. He hit .287 across 49 games there to earn the promotion to AA Corpus Christi where he played his final 36 games of the season.

In total, the 2019 draft pick and first-year player hit 20 home runs and drove in 70 during a successful campaign.

Michael Horrell, AA Corpus Christi (Houston Astros)
Michael Horrell spent plenty of time with Barefoot as he began his season with High-A Asheville and also ended his year in Corpus Christi. The right-handed reliever posted a 2.16 ERA in Asheville to earn a mid-season call-up. He posted a very similar number at the next level with a 2.25 ERA at AA across 16 outings. He struck out 67 in 69.2 total innings of work on the year.

Allan Winans, AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies (New York Mets)
Winans opened the 2021 season at High-A Brooklyn where he posted a 1.83 ERA in 12 games to earn a promotion to AA Binghamton. He posted even better numbers in AA with a 1.65 ERA in 14 appearances. Winans struck out 45 and kept his WHIP below 1.000 in 47 innings pitched.

The righty was a 2018 pick out of Campell and has now posted a 2.83 ERA across parts of three seasons in the minor leagues.

Seth Johnson, Single-A Charleston RiverDogs (Tampa Bay Rays)
Johnson posted a 6-6 record as a starting pitcher for the RiverDogs in his first full season. He posted a 2.88 ERA in 23 appearances and 16 starts. He showed effective stuff and struck out 115 in 93.2 innings on the hill.

He finished the year strong and picked up a W in his last three outings. He commanded the zone throughout the year and finished with a sterling 115:33 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Johnson was Campbell's first first-round draft pick in 2019.

Tyson Messer, Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (Chicago White Sox)
Messer made 30 appearances in his first full season of A-ball with the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. He finished the year with an 0-2 record and a 7.18 ERA. The righty struck out 31 in 31.1 IP on the year.

Messer was a 2019 draft pick and spent part of the 2019 season in the Arizona League before playing the 2021 campaign in Kannapolis.

Spencer Packard, Single-A Modesto Nuts (Seattle Mariners)
Packard was selected in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He made an immediate impact in Modesto batting .250 with three home runs and 18 RBI in the final 29 games of the season after joining the team.

Packard, a 2021 all-American for the Camels, was the 41st draft pick in program history and the 10th to be selected during Justin Haire's tenure as head coach. He finished the 2021 season at Campbell at 4th in the nation in RBIs and helped the Camels reach the Starkville Regional Final.

Independent Leagues
Marcus Skundrich played in the Pioneer Independent League for the Billings Mustangs. The former Campbell catcher hit .280 with two home runs and 26 RBI in 43 games for the Mustangs.
