CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With three golfers among the top 12 individuals, Campbell is in third place after Saturday's play in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course.
Only Campbell, host North Carolina, Arkansas State and UNCW were able to complete the first round as thunderstorms moved through the area in the late afternoon. The 17th-ranked Tar Heels finished the day at 12-under 276. Maryland was 3-under through 13 holes, while Campbell finished the day at 2-under-par 286 on the par-72, 7242-yard Finley layout.
Pontus Nyholm was tied for eighth at 2-under par, while
Josh Hetherington and
Henrik Lilja were tied for 12th at 1-under.
Romain Lanteri shot a 2-over 74, while
Claude Churchward and
Alejandro Cogollo finished the day at 7-over 79.
Starting from the 10th tee, Nyholm made the turn at 2-over par. However, he reeled off four birdies over a 7-hole stretch on the front side to move up the leader board. Lilja's day included four birdies, while Hetherington made three. Lanteri's round included 14 pars.
Peter Fountain of North Carolina stands atop the individual leader board at seven-under 65 after a bogey-free opening round. Julien Sale of Arkansas State and Maryland's William Koras are tied at six under.
Play continues Sunday before Monday's final round on the Tom Fazio redesign.
