Strong finish keeps Camels in lead

Four CU golfers among top 14 individuals

NINETY SIX, S.C. – A strong final eight holes lifted Campbell into a one-shot lead after Monday's second round of the Big South Conference men's golf stroke play championship at The Patriot Golf Course at Grand Harbor.

Red-shirt freshman Romain Lanteri fired a collegiate low 5-under 66 to move into a tie for ninth place at 2-under (74-66—140) and was joined by three other Camels in the top 14 heading into Tuesday's final round.  The top four teams from stroke play will move on to Wednesday's match play with the winner earning the Big South's automatic berth in the NCAA regionals.

Pontus Nyholm recovered from a slow start to break par for the 11th-consecutive round (69-70—139) and is eighth on the individual leader board at 3-under.  Josh Hetherington (72-70—142) and Henrik Lilja (72-70—142) are tied for 14th and Edwin Blomander (69-75—144) is tied for 21st in the 45-golfer field.

As a team, the top-seeded Camels (280-278—558) stood one over at the turn Monday, but played the last eight holes seven under to take a one-shot lead over Radford (282-277—559) through 36 holes.  Charleston Southern (280-283—563) is third, Gardner-Webb fourth (285-281—566) and Longwood fifth (285-282—567) in the nine-team field.

Nyholm was four over through five holes, but made six birdies and just one bogey over his last 13.  Hetherington was four over through two, but finished 4-under over his last four.  Lilja made a pair of birdies in his final three holes.

Lanteri's career-best day included eight birdies on the temporary par-71 layout and the native of Reunion Island, France climbed 26 places on the leaderboard.  Hunter Duncan of Radford (69-64—133) is the individual leader at 9-under par, four shots ahead of USC Upstate's Hunter Fry (70-67—137) and Ryan Tattan of Winthrop (68-69—137).

Campbell will again be paired with Charleston Southern and Radford Tuesday and start from the first tee at 9:40 a.m.  Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
