Buies Creek, N.C. – Eleven different Camels were recognized as all-conference performers by the Big South, including three top awards.
Zach Neto was named the Player of the Year,
Thomas Harrington was named Freshman of the Year, and head coach
Justin Haire was voted co-Coach of the Year.
In addition, five players landed on the first team, three more on second team, with another honorable mention and an all-academic team member.
The Camels five first-teamers are the most since the 2013 team also landed five on the first team. Campbell is the first team since Coastal Carolina in 2016 to put five on the first team along with both the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.
Neto did everything for the Camels, starting at every position except catcher on the infield, and posted a Big South-best .418 batting average, good for seventh in the nation. His average is the highest in the country among any player that also appeared on the mound this season. He also led the league in OBP and slugging and finished third in RBI. On the hill, he posted a 4-0 record with a 3.60 ERA across 10 appearances.
The Miami, Fla. native is just the third Camel to ever win Big South Player of the year, joining J.C. Hendrix (1991) and Cole Hallum (2015).
"Neto is beyond deserving," Coach Haire said. "He's started in five different spots, been excellent on the mound and since moving to the 3-hole in our lineup he's been one of the most dangerous hitters in the country. He's battled through some injuries, has taken every challenge head on and continues to have success."
Harrington made an immediate impact for the Campbell pitching staff, joining the weekend rotation during the first series and making a team-high 13 starts, going 5-2 with a 2.94 ERA, the lowest among Big South freshman starting pitchers. He posted the third lowest ERA and fourth lowest opponent batting average in the conference among qualified starters.
The righty is the fourth Camel to be named Freshman of the Year and the third Campbell pitcher in a row to earn the honor, joining Reggie Davis (1994), Logan Bender (2018) and
Ryan Chasse (2019).
"Tommy has been a huge cog for us this year," Haire added. "He's pitched in every spot in the weekend rotation and the bigger the stage the better he's prepared and performed. This is just the beginning for him."
Coach Haire was named the Co-Coach of the year alongside Gardner-Webb's Jim Chester. Haire also won the award in 2018. The seventh-year head coach led the Camels to a 33-14 record and first-place regular season finish. His Camels closed the season with 13 consecutive conference wins, the longest streak in program history.
Joining
Zach Neto on the first team are
Spencer Packard,
Connor Denning,
Matthew Christian and
Logan Heintzman.
Packard led the conference in RBI and was second in OBP. He finished the regular season as one of just eight players in the country with 60+ RBI.
Denning was constantly moving around the bases, as he led the Big South in doubles, total bases and runs scored.
Matthew Christian finished second in RBI, second in home runs, third in slugging and fifth in batting average, only trailing teammates in RBI and slugging. His 58 RBI are good for 13
th in the country.
Logan Heintzman was a true stopper out of the bullpen, inheriting 20 runners on the season and only allowing four to score. Three times he inherited the bases loaded and left them stranded. He posted a 1.82 ERA during Big South play.
In addition to Harrington on the second team, fellow pitchers
Ryan Chasse and
Kevin Westlake were also voted second-teamers.
Chasse was twice named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week and led the Camels with 68 strikeouts on the year. He's been steady for most of the year, as he has not been tagged with a loss since March 12. He owns the sixth best ERA and opposing batting average in the Big South. This is Chasse's second all-conference nod, also named to the first team in 2019.
Westlake owns a 3.06 ERA across 11 relief appearances and a season ERA of 2.61 including his one start. Through his first nine appearances of the season, he boasted just a 0.56 ERA.
Collin Wolf was tabbed an all-conference honorable mention after starting all 47 games on the infield for the Camels this season. He turned in countless web gems during the year while recording a team-high 115 assists. He was no slouch at the plate, pouring in the fourth most RBIs in the Big South this season.
Grant Harris was named to the Big South all-Academic Team for the second straight season. The redshirt senior graduated with a 3.895 GPA as a major in sport management with a double minor in finance and business administration. He was Campbell's best defensive outfield during the year with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 30 games. He also tied for the league lead in triples with four on the year.
"Having 10 guys get recognized is a really nice piece to the end of the regular season," Coach Haire said. "Each one of these guys have worked very hard and taken a lot ownership in their development. We are thrilled that so many are getting recognized for their efforts"
