defeated North Carolina Central 48-18 at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Campbell scored on six of its seven first-half drives and hit season highs for points (48), total offense, first downs (33) and rushing yards (315) against a previously unbeaten Eagle team that entered the contest ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense (13.5).
Bryant Barr ran for a career-high 135 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown for the Camels, who ran 83 plays to 64 for the visitors.
NaQuari Rogers added 78 rushing yards and one score, while
Lamagea McDowell scored twice on the ground.
Hajj-Malik Williams completed 22-of-33 passes for 248 yards and added 46 on the ground with one rushing TD.
Jalen Kelsey led CU with five receptions for 47 yards and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Aaron Maddox,
CJ Tillman and
Myles Rowser led Campbell with seven tackles each.
NOTEWORTHY
Campbell's 563 yards of total offense were the ninth most in a game in program history, and fifth most against a NCAA Division I opponent. The team's 563 yards are the most since racking up 580 in a win over Presbyterian last season.
Over its last two games, Campbell has amassed 966 yards of total offense.
Campbell rushed for five touchdowns against the Eagles. It marked the 10th time a CU team has rushed for five or more TDs in a single game.
BLOCK PARTY
The Camels' fourth quarter blocked punt returned for a touchdown was the third in Campbell history.
Alex Santiago, who has now been a part of two of those three instances, blocked the punt, and
Jalen Kelsey scooped up the ball at the goal line for the TD.
It was the 35th non-offensive touchdown in the program's modern era (since 2008).
Campbell ranked fourth in the FCS last season with four defensive touchdowns.
LEADING THE CAMELS
Williams is completing nearly 61 percent of his passes for 227.3 yards per game with three touchdowns. The QB has added 172 yards rushing with three touchdowns, while
Bryant Barr has rushed for 296 yards and two scores, while tight end
Julian Hill has hauled in 17 catches for 286 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Linebacker
CJ Tillman owns a team-high 23 tackles with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while
Aaron Maddox owns 22 stops. Defensive end
Josh Johnson also owns 18 tackles with a team-leading 6.5 stops for loss, with
Jonathan Jones collecting 18 tackles and an interception.
SCOUTING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
The Buccaneers, idle last week, are 0-4 on the season heading into their Big South opener. CSU dropped a 24-19 home contest to Furman in its last outing on September 24.
Ross Malmgren is averaging 189.8 passing yards per game with six total touchdowns, while Seth Anderson and Vinson Davis have combined for 493 receiving yards and all six of CSU's scores through the air. Garrett Sayegh has also registered 29 tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery.
The Bucs lead the all-time series with the Camels 5-0, including a 3-0 mark as Big South foes.
CAMELS RECEIVING TOP-25 VOTES
For the first time since 2019, Campbell is receiving votes in the FCS Top-25.
The Camels received five votes in this week's Stats Perform FCS Top-25 after defeating previously ranked NC Central, one of 13 squads just outside the national rankings. This is the fourth different season that the Camels have received top-25 votes, also picking up tallies in 2011, 2018 and 2019.
Campbell received votes for a program record six straight weeks in 2019 between the Stats Perform and AFCA Coaches' polls.
CU was also named an honorable mention FedEx Ground FCS National Team of the Week from Stats Perform on Monday.
WILLIAMS, KELSEY NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
After a 48-18 win over North Carolina Central, Campbell's
Hajj-Malik Williams and
Jalen Kelsey were named
Big South Conference players of the week. Williams was tabbed the league's offensive player of the week, while Kelsey earned top special teams honors.
A quarterback from Atlanta, Ga., Williams combined for 294 yards in CU's win over NC Central, completing 22-of-33 passes for 248 yards while adding 46 yards rushing with a touchdown. Williams' 66.7 percent completion percentage was a career-best in a game with 20 or more completions for the redshirt junior, who also scampered for a 17 yard touchdown in the second quarter, putting CU up 24-0. He also ran for 24 yards, a season-long run, to set up
Caleb Dowden's first quarter field goal.
Kelsey, meanwhile, gave Campbell its first non-offensive touchdown of the season, scooping up the ball at the goal line after
Alex Santiago's blocked punt to give the Camels a 48-12 lead over NCCU in the fourth quarter. The Camels' fourth quarter blocked punt returned for a touchdown was the third in Campbell history. Kelsey also added five catches for 47 yards against the Eagles.
Through four games, Camels have earned Big South weekly honors five times.
PETERSEN NAMED TO FCS PUNTER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST
Campbell's
Corey Petersen has been added to the
FCS Punter of the Year Watch List, presented by the Augusta Sports Council.
Petersen, a Traralgon, Australia native, is averaging 40.4 yards per punt so far this season, racking up a high of 56 yards on 12 tries. Petersen has forced four fair catches, while pinning opponents inside the 20 four times.
Petersen was named to the
Big South's preseason all-conference team in July.
The Augusta Sports Council, also home to the Ray Guy Award (awarded to the best collegiate punter in the FBS), created the FCS Punter of the Year Award in 2019 to honor the best collegiate punter playing in the FCS. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
THREE FORMER MINTER ASSISTANTS COACHING IN NFL
Three former
Mike Minter assistants now hold coaching positions in the National Football League.
Former Campbell assistant coaches Ben Bolling (Houston Texans), DeAndre Thompson (Denver Broncos) and Pat White (Los Angeles Chargers) are all coaching at football's highest level.
Bolling, a former record-holding wide receiver for the Camels (2011-15) and CU graduate, is in his second season in Houston as a defensive assistant after spending five years on Minter's staff.
Thompson coached Campbell's defensive backs for two seasons, 2019 and 2020, landing in Denver prior to the 2022 season.
White briefly spent time on Minter's staff as a quarterbacks coach in the spring of 2022, leaving for the Chargers in July.
REVISITING THE 2022 BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
In July, Campbell was picked second in the 2022 Big South Conference Preseason Poll, announced at the league's annual media day. With a pair of first place votes and nine total top-three votes of a possible 12, the Camels finished with 50 points, just behind North Carolina A&T, which finished with six first place tallies and 60 points.
Following the Camels were Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb in a tie for third with 44 points. Big South newcomer Bryant (33 points) and Robert Morris (21) rounded out the poll. Five of the six league members picked up at least one first place vote.
Campbell's second place preseason nod is its highest since moving to the Big South in 2018. CU was picked fourth in 2019 and 2020, also taking fifth in 2018 and 2021. Campbell was never voted higher than fourth in a preseason poll in its previous conference, the Pioneer Football League (2008-17).
