Campbell men claim Big South indoor title

Kioko named Most Valuable Athlete, Givens named Coach of the Year

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Campbell men's track and field team claimed its first Big South title in program history Friday at the JDL Fast Track.

The Camels won a total of eight events at the conference championships and totaled 141 points to defeat High Point (123) and North Carolina A&T (116) for the men's team title.

NC A&T took the women's title with 207 points, ahead of High Point (159), Hampton (96) and Campbell (49).

Virgil Givens was awarded Big South Coach of the Year after leading the Camels to their first conference title in his first year at the helm.

Athanas Kioko was named Most Valuable Athlete after earning first-place finishes in all three events he competed in.

Gabi Goecke and Travis Koekemoer were both named to the All-Academic team.

ON THE TRACK
Campbell swept the one mile run as Athanas Kioko won it on the men's side in 4:07.86 and Dorcus Ewoi for the women in 4:49.90. Ewoi also took third in the 3000m run with a time of 9:54.03.

Kioko concluded the meet with another win, his third in as many events, taking the 3000m title in 8:22.71.

Chastity Pickett wrapped up an impressive showing at the championship meet by taking fourth in the 400m dash in 56.54.

Dominique Alexander narrowly edged out a first-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 21.39. Ja'Travious Stewart earned a spot on the podium in the 60m dash, taking third in 6.75.

IN THE FIELD
C.J. McBride took top honors in the men's high jump after clearing 2.15m. The mark ranks as the best ever at the championship meet and is tied for the second best in Big South history overall.

The men swept the triple jump after posting the top four spots in the event. Andre Douglas led the way with a championship record mark of 15.62m. Shemar Miller followed in second (15.54m) while McBride (15.35m) and Tyrell Johnson (14.37m) wrapped up the top spots.

Omar Ibrahim led the Campbell throwers by placing fourth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 17.34m.

UP NEXT
Qualifiers for the NCAA Championships will have two weeks to prepare for the national meet held in Birmingham, Ala. on March 11-12.
