BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell
Domenic Zaccone has received an at-large berth to the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Zaccone, at 133 pounds, was one of the 44 total at-large selections added to next week's tournament field in Detroit, Mich.
The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, ratings percentage index, coaches ranking and conference tournament finish.
Seeding and brackets for this year's event will be revealed tomorrow, March 9, during the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Selection Show on NCAA.com at 6:00 p.m.
With the addition of Zaccone, six Camels, one shy of the program's all-time high, will head to the NCAA Championships. Joining Zaccone will be Southern Conference champions
Shannon Hanna at 141 pounds,
Caleb Hopkins at 184 and
Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight. Also receiving automatic berths were
Korbin Meink at 125 and
Josh Heil at 149, who claimed NCAA allocations with true place wins during Saturday's SoCon Championships, won by the Camels for the fourth straight season.
Zaccone, a redshirt sophomore from Orland Park, Ill., will make his first trip to the NCAA Championships, while Hopkins and Ghadiali qualified for the second straight year. Hanna will also make his first appearance in the tournament.
Heil will head to the NCAA Championships for a record fifth time, while Meink will make his third appearance.
At the SoCon Championships, Zaccone finished third at 133 pounds, wrestling back after a first round loss with three bonus point victories, including an 11-3 major decision over Gardner-Webb's Todd Carter in the third place match.
For the season, Zaccone is 14-9 overall.
The NCAA Championships will be held March 17-19 in Detroit, Mich.
