Volleyball announces 2022 schedule

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Head Coach Greg Goral has announced the 2022 schedule. The defending Big South Champions face a 28-match slate, beginning on Aug. 26 with the home opener set for Sept. 16.

The Camels will look to build on a record-setting season in 2021, setting program records for wins (21) and conference wins (14) en route to their first Big South Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

The 2022 campaign opens with 12 non-conference matches across four tournaments, three on the road and one at home. Among those, Campbell makes trips to Charlotte, Valparaiso, Ind., Lexington, Ky. and hosts the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Invitational.

"I think our four weeks of non-conference contests lays out nicely for us," Goral said. "We will be challenged each week by teams with different styles of play. Some physical, some fast, some ball control. All of them will put pressure on us in different ways helping us prepare for our conference matches."

Campbell begins the season in Charlotte, where the Camels will face the 49ers along with Wofford and Morgan State on Aug. 26-27.

The following weekend features the trip to Valpo to face the Beacons along with SIU Edwardsville and Northern Illinois on Sept. 2-3. Both SIUE and Northern Illinois will be first-time opponents for the Camels. Campbell has faced Valpo just once in 2014.

Campbell will not face Kentucky in Lexington, but have their work cut out for them against Indiana State on Sept. 9 and facing reigning national champion Wisconsin on Sept. 10. Campbell faces a reigning champion for the second-time in program history and first since 2010, when Campbell met the 2009 champion Penn State.

The non-conference slate concludes at home with the annual Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Invitational, with Robert Morris, NC Central and The Citadel visiting Buies Creek. This will be the ninth straight season the Camels have hosted a non-conference tournament at Gore Arena.

"I like the variety of teams we will face. Our opponents will really help us understand what we are good at, what we need to work on and as a whole, showcase our program on a national level as we try to build off of our success from last season."

The 16-match Big South schedule begins on Sept. 23 at Gardner-Webb. This season's Big South slate features two matches per week on some combination of Thursday, Friday or Saturday at either 6 or 2 p.m.

The eight weekend pairs of matches begin with road trips to Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern on Sept. 23-24. Campbell returns home to host Presbyterian and Winthrop on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. It's a home-road split at Radford and hosting High Point on Oct. 6-8. Campbell heads west to face USC Upstate and UNC Asheville on Oct. 14-15.

The schedule then rolls over with the same pairs of teams in new locations, hosting CSU and Gardner-Webb on Oct. 20-21. Campbell then faces three road matches, at Winthrop and PC on Oct. 28-29 before the split weekend at High Point and home to Radford on Nov. 3-5. The season wraps up at home with UNC Asheville and USC Upstate on Nov. 11-12.

The Big South Championship will be hosted by High Point this year and is set for Nov. 19-20. The top four teams during the regular season will qualify for the single-elimination tournament.
