Camels split season-opening doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Fighting Camels opened the 2022 campaign by splitting a doubleheader against Syracuse and Morgan State. Campbell fell in four to Syracuse but bounced back in the nightcap with a straight-set win over Morgan State.
 
Match One Recap
Campbell dropped the season opener against Syracuse 3-1. The Camels dropped the first two sets before claiming the third to prolong the match, but ultimately fell in four.
 
Lailah Green paced the Camels with a double-double of the season on 11 kills and 16 digs. Melody Paige added 10 kills while Chloe Cook added 9.
 
Claranne Fechter led the defense with a match-high 24 digs, while freshman Aley Clent notched four blocks as the starting middle blocker.
 
Campbell nearly pulled out a big win in the first set, having trailed 18-10 before battling back to even things up at 22-22. The Camels could never grab the lead and dropped the first 25-23.
 
After falling in the second set 25-18, the Camels picked up the third 25-19. Leading just 12-11, five straight points gave Campbell a comfortable cushion the rest of the way. The burst featured two kills from Cook and three Syracuse attack errors.
 
Campbell was unable to force a deciding fifth set as Syracuse took the fourth 25-20.
 
Syracuse's Polina Shemanova tallied a match-high 18 kills.
 
Match Two Recap
Campbell jumped out to an early lead with a commanding 25-16 set win. The Camels jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back, capping the set with an ace from McKenna Sciacca, one of her three on the night.
 
The Bears hung tougher in the second match, keeping things within a point at 17-16, but a late burst from the Camels pushed them to a 25-20 win in the second.
 
The Camels polished things off with a 25-17 win in the third set, never trailing in the frame.
 
Sciacca had a big match dishing out 16 assists and 17 digs. Chloe Cook led the attack with 14 kills on just 21 attempts, hitting a blistering .571.
 
Campbell hit .311 as a team during the match while holding the Bears to .138.
