McNeely, Thompson named FCS ADA Academic All-Stars

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's Josh McNeely and Keshawn Thompson have been named to the 25th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team.

The pair of Camels were two of 53 student-athletes named to the list, and two of three representatives from Big South Conference members.

McNeely earned All-Big South honors for the second straight season, this time at punt return, also serving as the Camels' primary kick returner again in 2022. Logging nearly 700 yards in total returns, the Charlotte native returned a season-long 29 yard punt in a win over Charleston Southern, adding 30-plus yard kick returns against William & Mary, Jackson State and Gardner-Webb. Named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after posting 104 total return yards and setting up two CU scores at William & Mary, McNeely was also a regular as a cornerback on the Campbell defense, making 22 tackles and adding a fumble recovery. He was also named 2022 Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators.

Thompson was also named one of 15 finalists for the FedEx Ground Doris Robinson Award, announced by Stats Perform. Earning Big South Conference All-Academic Team honors, as well as 2022 Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators, Thompson is currently pursuing his MBA. The Hillsborough native was also a 2021 Academic All-District honoree, notching 25 tackles this season, including a sack in a win over Robert Morris, with a season-high four tackles against The Citadel and Bryant. Also a staple on the CU special teams units, Thompson gathered a career and team-high 80 tackles for the Camels in 2021.

Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) institutions are eligible for the award. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate or graduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. They must have reached their second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. They also must have participated in 50 percent of the games played at their designated position.
