FAIRFAX, Va. – Campbell wrestler Shannon Hanna took first place at 149 pounds at the A Better Way Athletics Patriot Open held at the George Mason Field House on Sunday. Two other wrestlers also placed on the podium of their respective weight classes, Logan Heil (second place, 133 pounds) and Zander Phaturos (sixth place, 125 pounds).
In all, six Fighting Camels competed at the event as unattached athletes.
Hanna went 4-0 on the day, recorded a 20-4 tech fall victory in his first match. He followed that with three wins by decision, winning each of them by one point. In his quarterfinal bout, he outlasted American's Antonio Segura to earn a 2-1 victory in the second tiebreaker. He then won the semifinal match, 7-6, before defeating Cross Wasilewski in the championship match.
Heil also earned a bonus-point victory on the day, defeating Garrett Totten by an 11-1 major decision in his first action. He then added a ranked win, earning a takedown in the overtime period to defeat #28 Gable Strickland of Lock Haven with a 7-4 score.
After falling in the second round, Phaturos blazed through the consolation bracket with three straight victories, all by decision. He advanced to the fifth-place bout, where he fell to App State's Chad Bellis. However, his effort was enough to secure a spot on the podium for the second time this year. Phaturos took fifth place at the Southeast Open earlier this season.
Hagen Heistand, Gunner Endicott and Brant Cracraft also travelled to compete as unattached wrestlers, with each of them coming away with one victory.

Head Coach Scotti Sentes
On what it means to have some of his team members wrestle unattached at the Patriot Open:
"In wrestling, if you are wrestling unattached, that means you are going to the event without a coach and without the financial support from the wrestling program. To have six guys decide to invest in themselves, travel with each other to Virginia and get some matches in, I was excited to hear and proud to see it. Much less for these guys to make that investment in themselves the weekend before final exams. This tells me these guys really care about improving and when you really care, you are going to get better."
149 Shannon Hanna
On the difference in mentality and preparation going into an event as an unattached wrestler:
"Nothing really changes as far as mentality and preparation. Even though we didn't have our coach there the goal is still to go out, wrestle hard, and win. For me personally it might be a little different since I'm one of the older guys now, so I was trying my best to coach the younger guys on the team and give them some security by being in their corner."
On how he views his role on the team during his redshirt season:
"I view myself as a leader on this team and I strive to be an example for the younger guys. It sucks not being on the mat during dual matches, but I'm still able to help my teammates prepare for their matches and it's always fun cheering them on."
