BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After going 7-0 to start the season in the month of November, Campbell heavyweight Taye Ghadiali has been named the SoCon Wrestler of the Month, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Ranked as high as No. 8 in Intermat and Wrestlestat rankings, Ghadiali is the top-ranked wrestler on the Campbell squad and in the conference.
"First off, I want to give all glory to God," said Ghadiali. "Secondly, I'm grateful and honored to wake up every day and be able to continue chasing my dreams and represent Campbell University. It's great to see my hard work is paying off, but I'm still not settling. Grind don't stop!"
Ghadiali recorded bonus point victories in all seven of his matches in November. He began the season pinning Lucas Stoddard of Army in 3:47 at the Battle at Liberty. He was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler Belt by UFC Fight Pass for his performance at the event.
The Campbell heavyweight continued his hot start to the season by going 4-0 at the Southeast Open, winning the heavyweight open division. His four victories consisted of two tech falls and two pins. He began the day with tech fall victories over VMI's B. Jackson (4:04) and Zane Lanham of Life University (5:16).
Ghadiali pinned his opponents in the semifinals and finals of the Southeast Open, both of which ranked in the top-25. First, he pinned #21 B. McDermott of Oregon State in 6:26. Ghadiali followed that up in the first-place bout by beating #22 M. Wolfgram (WVU) in 3:13.
In Campbell's dual against #9 Nebraska, Ghadiali beat Harley Andrews with a 24-12 major decision. He followed that with a pin in the dual against Wyoming in the Battle in the Barn, defeating Kevin Zimmer in 3:47. It was Ghadiali's fourth pin of the year.
Ghadiali has already started December strong to continue his campaign, taking third place at the vaunted Cliff Keen Invitational. He went 5-1 with four wins against ranked opponents and four bonus-point victories. It is the highest finish ever for a Campbell athlete at the event.
"Taye is coming off a great performance at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas," Sentes said. "Obviously we expect him to win that tournament, but to go out and major decision the #22 and #12 wrestlers in the country, it gives some insight to what he is capable of doing. I expect Taye to dominate every single time he steps out on the mat, and I think after this weekend the rest of the country is expecting that as well. It's nice for Taye to receive recognition from the SoCon, but I promise you his head is off to the next battle at hand."
This is Ghadiali's second Wrestler of the Month recognition from the SoCon, as he also earned it in December of last season.
