Campbell opens CAA play with Long Island road trip

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell women's soccer team begins CAA play with a pair of road contests on Long Island. The Camels will first take on Stony Brook Thursday evening, followed by a matchup with the Hofstra Pride on Sunday.

The Fighting Camels are looking for their first road victory of the season. They began the year with a 2-2 draw at High Point and a 2-0 defeat to Old Dominion.

Series History: This is the first-ever matchup between the Campbell Fighting Camels and the Stony Brook Seawolves. It is one of five first-time opponents among CAA members for the Camels this year (Northeastern, Drexel, Delaware, Monmouth).

Scouting the Opponent: The Seawolves had a 2-1-2 record through their nonconference schedule. They have wins against Lafayette (3-1) and at Merrimack (2-1). Most recently, they recorded a 2-2 tie against Fordham last Thursday. They have recorded eight goals in the first five games, with the only scoreless contest being against Bryant in a 0-0 tie. They are ranked second in the CAA in shots-on-goal per game at 7.40. They are coached by Tobias Bischof, who is in his fifth season at Stony Brook and has accumulated a 36-27-9 record.

Series History: This is only the second time the Fighting Camels will take on the Pride. Their only previous matchup came in 1993, and it was a 2-0 victory for Campbell.

Scouting the Opponent: The Pride finished nonconference play with a 3-2 record. They opened their season with a 1-0 defeat to Albany, but they followed that up with a 1-0 victory over Rutgers on Aug. 20. They currently have a two-match win streak (2-1 at FDU, 1-0 vs. Saint Joseph's). The team is led by sophomore midfielder Wiktoria Fronc, who ranks first on the team in goals, assists, and shots. She has played 447 of a possible 450 minutes. Simon Riddiough is in his 18th season as Hofstra's head coach and has amassed over 200 wins for the program. He has led Hofstra to seven CAA championships, including the past two.

First Year In CAA: Campbell begins its first season as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association after spending the previous 12 seasons as a member of the Big South. In that time, the Camels amassed 73 conference wins and won the conference tournament in 2020-21.

Last Time Out: Campbell scored early and held on for a 1-0 victory over Davidson in their final non-conference match. Sage Dougherty entered the Starting XI for the first time of the season and scored the winning goal in the 8th minute off an assist from Alyssa Tucker. Sierra Vance notched three saves in goal, and Laney Peabody led the stout defense, playing all 90 minutes.

Freshman of the Week: Freshman forward Alyssa Tucker was named the CAA Freshman of the Week on August 28, the first weekly award for a Camel in the CAA era. Tucker notched her second goal of the season against Radford, scoring off an assist from Amber Liston in the 23rd minute. She is the first Campbell women's soccer player to be named conference freshman of the week since Reagan Baiotto in September of 2021.

Preseason Award Winners:  Laney Peabody was named to the Preseason All-CAA Team along with 11 other players. The reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Year, she joins Monmouth senior Lauren Bruno and Stony Brook grad student Catharina von Drigalski as the three defenders on the preseason team.
