LANCASTER, Pa. – 125-pound Anthony Molton was perfect on the day, taking first place at the Franklin & Marshall Open Friday. In total, a school record eight Camels placed at the event.
Molton was 5-0, with three bonus-point victories to start out. He recorded two fall victories – against Grant Treaster (Navy) in 4:14, and versus Binghamton's Carson Wagner in 4:01.
Molton then defeated a pair of NC State wrestlers in the semifinals and final. First, he recorded a 5-4 decision over Vince Robinson with a takedown in the final 30 seconds. He followed that up with another takedown in the last 30 seconds and a victory over Troy Hohman (4-1) to take first place. Molton is the first Campbell wrestler to take first place at the Franklin & Marshall Open.
The Fighting Camels had a trio of second place finishers as well. Before today, Campbell had only had one finalist in their previous five appearances at the F&M Open. Austin Murphy, Levi Hopkins, and Taye Ghadiali each made it to the finals before losing their first bout of the day.
Caleb Hopkins placed third at 184 pounds. He recorded three pins on the day, including in the third-place match against Joshua Cordio (Air Force) in 59 seconds.
Domenic Zaccone and Zander Phaturos each placed fourth after strong outings on the day. True freshman Cooper Shore was the final Camel to place, finishing sixth at 125 pounds. After losing his second match, Shore rattled off four-straight wins to advance to the consolation finals, where he met the six-match limit for the event.

QUOTABLE
Assistant Coach Josh Heil
"For the most part our guys wrestled well and made improvements from the last time they wrestled. Obviously, we know we have a lot to work on, but it's good to see a lot of these guys go out there and grind 5-6 matches in one day. These are the types of days that make you tough if you're willing to stand up to the challenge!"

125 Anthony Molton
On the improvement of his performance:
"I'd say I gained a little more confidence. In the beginning of the season, coming back [from injury], I only had a couple matches. In our dual against Stanford, I think I found what I was missing, and I used that to have a good match against Purdue. Also, just turning it up with how hard I go in the practice room. I'd say I was a little more laid back before, but now I'm feeling 100% and I'm all in and going as hard as I can in every aspect."
On his takedowns in the final 30 seconds and if was aware of the clock or not:
"I'd say it was a little bit of both. I did look up at the clock somewhere around 45 seconds or one minute mark. I knew I had to get something. You kind of just have that awareness of how much time you have without thinking about it. I was taking my time, but also gunning for it if I get in position. Luckily, I made something open up and I was able to score from there."
On where his confidence level is at now:
"I'd say it's pretty high. I think I covered a lot of things in the practice room and it showed out in my matches. I'm seeing improvement in the small things that I'm making actually work in these matches, and it is boosting my confidence. I know there are things I still need to tweak, so it's not arrogance. But I can recognize I'm making progress. As a team, we push ourselves to high levels every time we go out there, and that's where my head is at."
125 Cooper Shore
On if his approach changed after his loss:
"I started taking more of a calm approach, reminding myself these are just wrestling matches. I tried to keep my mind focused in the match instead of the external things, or even the other matches. I took it one match at a time."
On what it was like for his second collegiate tournament:
"At first, I was nervous, but honestly, it was really nice to be out here and get a taste of what it's like on the college scene. I had more exposure to some of those guys that I might not have seen if there was a different division. I was blessed to get the opportunity to be where I was at."
