Camels greet UNCG in matchup between conference heavyweights

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team continues its homestand in the final month of the regular season as it faces UNC Greensboro in its last nonconference matchup of the season on Wednesday, April 22, at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game will be streamed on FloCollege, with live statistics available.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

UNC Greensboro enters at 34-15 overall and 13-2 in SoCon play and is riding a six-game winning streak. UNC Greensboro was ranked No. 16 in the latest D1Softball.com Mid-Major Rankings. The Spartans are 9-6 on the road this season.

Offensively, UNCG is led by Kaylyn Belfield, who has a team-high .384 batting average and 61 hits. The Spartans have three players with double-digit home runs with Nya South, Laney Deane and Macy Michael. The trio also rank as the team's top three in RBIs. South leads with 13 home runs, while Deane has a team-best 49 RBIs. In the circle, junior Brooklyn Shroyer has earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors three times and owns a 1.74 ERA with a team-best 146 strikeouts. As a staff, UNCG has a 2.28 ERA, with three pitchers posting ERAs under 2.50 while throwing at least 77.0 innings.

UNCG is led by Janelle Breneman in her 15th season. She is the program's all-time leader in wins with 466 and has guided the Spartans to a winning record in every season at UNCG. Breneman earned SoCon Coach of the Year honors in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023.

SERIES HISTORY

Campbell trails the all-time series 22-31. The teams last met Feb. 22, 2023, at the Carolina Classic in Columbus, South Carolina, where Campbell won 3-1. All runs were scored in the first inning. Allyiah Swiney and Charlie Montgomery both appeared in the game, with Swiney starting in right field. UNCG last defeated Campbell in 2018 in an extra-inning game in Greensboro. Since 2007, the Spartans are 1-3 in Buies Creek, with their lone win coming in 2007. Breneman is 2-4 against Campbell and 0-2 in Buies Creek. This will be the first meeting between UNCG and a Campbell team led by Emily Carosone.

LAST TIME OUT

Campbell rebounded after a 4-1 loss in the CAA series opener to Elon, winning the next two games to secure its fifth conference series victory of the season. The Camels outscored the Phoenix 27-2 over the final two games.

On Saturday, Campbell posted its highest run total since 2022 in an 18-1, five-inning win at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The Camels broke the game open with an 11-run third inning, sending 16 batters to the plate. Charlie Montgomery and Emma Slutzah each had three hits, with Slutzah driving in four runs. Ten players recorded hits, and each drove in at least one run.

On Sunday, Campbell secured a 9-1, six-inning win, finishing with nine hits from seven players. Kylie Specht went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Haley Krebs also had two hits. Allyiah Swiney drove in two runs, and Specht, Swiney and Montgomery each stole a base.
