Knocks Troy State Out Of Post Season With
Doubleheader Sweep
TROY, Ala. - Campbell took both games of a
doubleheader header against Troy State Saturday afternoon at
Riddle-Pace Field. The two losses knocked the Trojans out of the
Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
Campbell (22-28, 14-19 A-Sun) pounded out seven hits and
received a complete-game shutout from junior Rob Finch to defeat
the Trojans, 2-0, in game one of the doubleheader. Finch (4-4) went
the distance, allowing six hits while striking out two to pick up
the victory.
In game two, the Camels benefited from another outstanding
pitching performance. This time it came from senior Jeff Stovall.
Stovall (6-5) went the distance, allowing one run on five hits
while striking out one. Campbell racked up nine hits to defeat the
Trojans, 3-1.
In game one, the Camels took the lead in the first inning
pushing across a run. First baseman Phillip Strickland reached on a
one-out single and advanced to third on a double by shortstop Tom
Rispoli. Strickland scored on a RBI-groundout by third baseman
Derek Barrows to put Campbell ahead, 1-0.
Campbell scored again in the fifth inning on a RBI-double by
second baseman Sal Deanda to score right fielder Lonnie Whitehead
and provide the final margin.
Troy State (27-27, 16-17 A-Sun) could never get anything going
in game one. Finch never allowed more than one hit in any
inning.
Trojan starting pitcher Justin Eason (3-5) suffered the loss for
the Trojans, allowing two runs on seven hits while going the
distance.
In game two, Troy State started the scoring pushing across a run
in the bottom of the third. Right fielder Al Stephens led of the
inning with his first home run of the season, ripping a 0-2
fastball from Stovall over the left field wall to put the Trojans
up, 1-0.
Campbell fought back with two runs in the top the fourth. With
two outs, the Camels strung together four consecutive singles which
plated the two runs. They got RBI-singles from Barrows and
Whitehead to put the Camels ahead, 2-1.
The Camels added another run in the sixth inning on a RBI-double
by Barrows to put the game out of reach.
Troy State starting pitcher Mal Winters (3-7) picked up the
loss, allowing three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The Camels finish the season tenth in the A-Sun standings, three
games out of a tournament bid. Troy State ends the season in
eighth place in the A-Sun standings, missing out on the conference
tournament by one game. [Game
