Camels Up-Ended by Pirates

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels nearly pulled off the second victory versus a ranked foe under second year skipper Greg Goff. East Carolina posted one run each of the first three innings as they carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Campbell would finally find the bats and wound up posting a six spot on the board.

The Camels half of the inning got started with a couple of free passes, as Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) and D.J. Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) were both hit by a pitch. After Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.) reached on a fielder's choice and Johnson reached second on an error by the first baseman, the Camels had bases loaded with one out.

Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.) walked and brought home Chris Bangi to score the Camels first run. Zach Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.) would single, allowing D.J. Johnson to score, and leaving the bases loaded. Alex Aycoth (Sanford, Fla.) then brought home Ryan Hamme and Ellis Lowe thanks to a double down the right field line to give the Camels their first lead. Zach Johnson would score on a wild pitch by ECU hurler Sthil Sowers to push the lead to 5-3. Campbell would push one more run across as they lead 6-3 after three complete innings.

The Pirates and the Camels would trade runs in the middle of the game, as ECU posted one run in the top of the fourth and Campbell posted one in the bottom of the fifth. Entering the top half of the sixth Campbell led 7-4.

Junior Logan Davis (Ft. Cobb, Okla.) would get the call on the hill Tuesday for the Camels. Davis would pitch just 1.2 innings allowing just two runs on three hits. Jonathon Lopez (Vineland, N.J.), Parker Fleming (Lexington, S.C.) and Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood, N.C.) would pitch the next 5.2 innings allowing ten hits while six runs came around to score.

East Carolina would tie the game thanks to a few singles, an error and a wild pitch. After the sixth inning the game would be tied at seven. Campbell would enter the bottom of the eighth trailing the Pirates 8-7.

In the bottom of the eighth, Campbell got a lead off single from Ryan Hamme and he would advance to second thanks to Ellis Lowe's sacrifice bunt. After Alex Aycoth was hit by a pitch, Brian Gana would bring home Ryan Hamme with a two out single through the left side. Matt Keen would advance to first on a throwing error by the shortstop Dustin Harrington. Aycoth would score on the play, to give the Camels the 9-8 lead.

Ryan Hamme was called to the mound in the top of the eighth with one out on the scoreboard. Hamme would strikeout the first two batters he faced in the eighth. Hamme would remain on the bump in the ninth. After allowing a single to the leadoff hitter, Ryan Hamme made back-to-back veteran plays, getting the lead runner on back to back attempts to advance the runner to second.

After a pair of singles, the Pirates were down to their last at-bat as they had two outs with a two balls, one strike count. Kyle Roller delivered a two out, two RBI single to push the Pirates ahead by a score of 10-9.

Ryan Hamme would be the lone base runner for the Camels in the ninth after being walked with two outs. Ellis Lowe could not advance Hamme as he struck out to end the game.

Ryan Hamme was credited with the loss and drops to 2-3 on the season. Seth Simmons would be credited with the win after pitching the final three innings giving up two hits while two runs came in to score.

Campbell will continue their four-game home stand as they host conference foe North Florida this weekend. The Camels and the Ospreys will square off at Taylor Field on Friday at 4 p.m., with a doubleheader schedule slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
