HIGH POINT, N.C. The
Campbell University baseball team defeated the Panthers of High
Point University on Tuesday night by a score of 16-7. Campbell improves to 12-13 on the
season, while High Point drops to 7-15.
Both the Camels
and the Panthers would go scoreless in the first two innings, but
then the Camels would find their offensive stride.
Chris Bangi
(Jacksonville, Fla.) got the third inning started by being hit by a
pitch. Ellis Lowe (San
Diego, Calif.) would then single, followed by a Ryan Hamme
(Wilmington, N.C.) RBI double. The Camels would post two more runs in
the third thanks to a Zach Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.) double that
scored Ryan Hamme and Alex Aycoth (Sanford, Fla.).
The Camels would
increase their lead with a strong fourth inning in which they
scored seven runs. The
Camels would bring three runs around to score after Ryan Hamme hit
his second home run of the season, while driving in his
30th, 31st and 32nd RBI.
The Camels would
continue the strong fourth inning. After Alex Aycoth scored on a bases
loaded walk to Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood, N.C.), Brian Gana
(Richland, Wash.) would score on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Braswell
(Rocky Mount, N.C.). Two
more runs would come in to score thanks to a Chris Bangi
single. The two runs
brought in by Bangi would be his 14th and
15th RBI of the season.
Campbell hurler
Logan Davis got the start on the hill for the Camels. Davis (Ft. Cobb, Okla.) pitched four
complete innings allowing just two runs on two hits.
High Point would
finally get on the scoreboard with two runs in the home half of the
fourth inning. However, the
Camels would answer right back in the top of the fifth inning.
Ryan Hamme would
start the fifth inning with a double, his third extra base hit of
the game. Hamme is the
first Campbell player to have three or more extra base hits in one
game since the 2007 campaign. Carlton Floyd last accomplished the
feat for the Camels against Holy Cross on March 5, 2007.
Ryan Hamme would
later score on a wild pitch to push the Camels lead to 11-2. Carlton Floyd would extend the
Camels lead to 13-2 with a two-run home run. The home run by Floyd is his second of
the season.
In the top of the
seventh, Campbell would see another ball clear the outfield
fence. Zach Johnson hit his
sixth home run of the season, thus extending the Camels lead to
14-3.
High Point would
post two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Camels would
match that in the eighth inning. Ellis Lowe would drive in his
25th RBI of the season thanks to his second single of
the night. Blake Lowry
(Garner, N.C.) would also be credited with an RBI after drawing a
bases loaded walk.
Campbell would use
Hunter Ford (Wilmington, N.C.) and Jonathon Lopez (Vineland, N.J.)
would close out the game on the bump. Ford would be credited with his first
win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings giving up three hits
while three Panthers came around to score (just one of which was
earned). Lopez pitched the
final 2.2 innings, allowing just two runs on two hits.
High Point hurler
Mikel Rodenberg was credited with his second loss of the season
after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up seven hits while eight runs
came around to score.
Leaders at the
dish for Campbell were, Chris Bangi, Ellis Lowe, Ryan Hamme, Zach
Johnson and Carlton Floyd.
Bangi finished the day with a hit, two RBI, three runs scored, as
well as a stolen base. Lowe
finished with three hits, one RBI while scoring two runs.
Ryan Hamme
finished 3-for-4, with four RBI while scoring three runs of his
own. Zach Johnson finished
with four hits, three RBI and three runs, meanwhile Carlton Floyd
finished a perfect 3-for-3, with three RBI and two runs scored.
Campbell's three
home run night pushes their season total to 19. In 58 games during the 2008 campaign,
the Camels managed just 20 homeruns. Over the first 25 games of 2009,
Campbell has tallied 254 runs, which sits just 30 shy of the 2008
squad's season total of 284.
Campbell will head
to Savannah, Ga. this weekend as they will face the Tigers of
Savannah State. Friday's
doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on
Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
