BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell University baseball team won
both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Taylor Field against the
Tigers of Savannah State.
With the wins Campbell improves to 14-13 on the season while
Savannah State dips to 15-16.
Campbell
12, Savannah State 10
(Game 1)
Campbell got on
the scoreboard in the first inning when Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood,
N.C.) scored on an Alex Aycoth (Sanford, Fla.) single. Campbell would post another run in the
bottom of the second.
Stephen Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) doubled to right center and would
come in to score on Chris Bangi's (Jacksonville, Fla.) double down
the right field line.
Savannah State
would own a 3-2 lead heading to the bottom of the third. Campbell would answer the Tigers
two run third by posting five runs in the bottom half of the
third.
Campbell's third
inning got started with back to back walks by Carlton Floyd and
Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.). After Alex Aycoth flied out to center
field, Brian Gana (Richland, Wash.) doubled to left field, which
allowed Floyd to score.
Lowe would score on Zach Johnson's (Smithfield, N.C.) sacrifice
fly.
Brian Gana,
Stephen Parsons and Josh Holskey (Roanoke, Va.) would all come in
to score with two outs, pushing the Campbell lead to 7-3.
Savannah State
would score a single run in the fourth, then post six runs in the
fifth. The sixth run inning
gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead.
Campbell would go
scoreless in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings before
finding their offense again.
The Camels scored
five runs in the home half of the eighth to give them a 12-10
lead. With the score tied
at 10 a piece, Ellis Lowe was intentionally walked to load the
bases for Campbell. Alex
Aycoth would then walk, which brought Chris Bangi home. That run would prove to be enough,
even though Campbell would score one more run en route to the 12-10
win.
Josh Fish would
get the start on the hill for the Camels. The senior from Bellingham, Wash.
would go four complete innings, allowing four runs on six hits,
while fanning five batters.
Jeff Rydman would
relieve Fish, however the Gladstone, Mo. native would pitch just
one inning allowing seven hits while six runs came in to
score. Logan Davis would be
credited with the win and improve to 5-0 on the season. Davis, the junior from Ft. Cobb,
Okla., pitched the final four innings. Davis shutdown the Tigers he allowed
no hits and no runs, while striking out five. The five strikeouts tied a career best
for the first year Camel.
Stephen Parsons
and D.J. Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) paced the Camels in the
game. Parsons finished with
three hits, one RBI, and three runs socred. The three hits and three runs scored
ties career bests for Parsons. Meanwhile, Johnson finished with three
hits, three RBI and a run scored. Johnson's three hits and three RBI are
both career highs for the junior.
Joseph Jackson was
credited with first loss of the season after pitching 4.2 innings
allowing four runs on seven hits.
Campbell
18, Savannah State 1
(Game 2)
Campbell would use
their momentum from the end of game one to jump on the Tigers early
in game two. Campbell would
put 10 runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning thanks
to 11 hits and four Savannah State errors.
Alex Aycoth got
the inning started with a double to center field, followed by a
Brian Gana single through the left side. Aycoth would attempt to score but
would be put out at the plate. Zach Johnson would then double to left
field, allowing Gana to score. Zach Johnson would then steal third
base and score on the play thanks to a throwing error by the
catcher.
Matt Keen (Four
Oaks, N.C.) would double to left field for Campbell's fourth hit of
the inning. Keen would come
in to score after advancing to third by a throwing error by the
catcher. Following Keen's
run, Bryan Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) would double to the left
center field gap.
Campbell would go
on to score seven more runs in the inning. Campbell would send 17 batters to the
plate in the second inning, of the 11 hits; Campbell had five extra
base hits. Four of those
five hits were doubles; the other hit was Zach Johnson's seventh
homerun of the season.
Savannah State
would score their lone run in the top of the fourth inning when
David Washington scored on a Julius Green single.
Campbell would
post a single run in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth
inning and four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Campbell hurler
Hunter Ford (Wilmington, N.C) set a season best for innings pitched
with 7.0, while setting a career best with seven strikeouts. Ford was credited with his
second win of the week and the season after allowing just one run
on nine hits.
Campbell was led
at the plate by a host of players. Chris Bangi finished 2-for-2, with a
RBI and a run scored, while Brian Gana finished 3-of-4 with three
runs scored and a RBI. Zach
Johnson finished 2-of-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Matt Keen finished a perfect
4-of-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Bryan Braswell and D.J. Johnson
combined for four hits and three RBI.
Savannah State
hurler Robert Ramsdale was credited with his third loss of the
season after pitching just 1.2 innings giving up 11 hits while 10
runs came in to score.
Campbell would use
Richard Gaito (Cliffside Park, N.J) and Ethan Meiggs (Camden, N.C.)
to close out the game. Each
would pitch one inning, while each struck out a batter. Neither allowed a hit or a run.
Campbell's 22 hits
is a season high for Campbell, while the 18 runs scored is second
best on the season. Through
27 games in 2009, the Camels have 21 home runs and have scored 284
runs. The 2008 squad had
just 20 home runs and 284 runs in 58 games.
Campbell will
entertain the Panthers of High Point on Tuesday. First pitch at Taylor Field is slated
for 6:30 p.m.
