NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Fighting Camels did what they needed to
do as they jumped out to an early lead in baseball action on
Saturday afternoon.
Campbell owned an early 7-2 lead after three and a half innings,
but held on to win by a score of 8-7. Campbell improves to 25-21 on the
season and 7-16 in A-Sun; meanwhile Lipscomb dips to 21-29 (15-12
A-Sun).
The series finale
started the same as the previous two games with the Bisons scoring
in the second inning, followed by a Campbell rally in the top of
the third.
Lipscomb took an
early 2-0 lead when Tennyson Dodd singled up the middle, allowing
Ryan Wilkins and Allen Bolden to score.
Campbell responded
with a five run third inning en route to a 5-2 lead. Campbell quickly loaded the bases as
D.J. Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was hit by a pitch followed by a
pair of singles by Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Ellis Lowe
(San Diego, Calif.). The
trio of runners advanced 90 feet on a Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.)
sacrifice fly. The Camels
again loaded the bases when Brian Gana (Richland, Wash.)
walked.
Chris Bangi and
Ellis Lowe scored on Alex Aycoth's (Sanford, Fla.) double down the
left field line, giving the Camels a 3-2 advantage. Campbell pushed two more runs across
on a pair of RBI singles by Matt Keen (Four Oaks, N.C.) and Bryan
Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.).
Already leading
5-2, Campbell scored a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth
inning. Chris Bangi started
the fourth inning with a single to right field; Ellis Lowe followed
with a single to left field. Chris Bangi advanced 180 feet thanks
to two Bisons errors on the same play. Bangi moved to third on a throwing
error by Bisons catcher Logan Hostettler and scored on an error by
the center fielder Tyler Wilson. Ellis Lowe was able to move to second
base on the pair of errors.
Lowe scored to
give the Camels a 7-2 lead when Brian Gana hit his 10th
double of the season. The
Camels and the Bisons would post zeros on the board until the
bottom of the seventh inning.
Senior Ryan Hamme
started on the hill for the Camels in the finale. Hamme tied a career high in innings
pitched (8.0) and strikeouts (8). Earlier this season Hamme pitched
eight complete innings at ETSU; Hamme set his career mark of eight
strikeouts earlier this season against the Ospreys of North
Florida.
Ryan Hamme
received plenty of help from the Campbell defense, specifically
short stop D.J. Johnson.
With a Bisons runner standing on second and two outs in the fifth,
Johnson saved a run when he made a diving catch in left field. Johnson later made a tremendous
catch in left center field; Johnson lost his footing and fell down,
but still managed to make the catch lying on his back to record the
second out of the ninth inning.
Lipscomb scored
three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth. Campbell managed just one run over the
same stretch. Campbell
owned an 8-7 lead heading to the home half of the ninth inning.
First baseman
Justin Sanders singled to right field to start the Bisons ninth
inning. Dan Gardo (West
Chester, Pa.) came in to relieve Ryan Hamme. Sanders advanced to second on a Justin
Wilkins sacrifice bunt.
Allen Bolden popped out to D.J. Johnson and Tennyson Dodd was
intentionally walked to give the Bisons a runner on first and
second with two outs. Logan
Hostettler hit into a game ending fielder's choice as pinch runner
James Tunnell was out at second base.
Ryan Hamme was
credited with his third victory of the season and now owns a 3-6
mark on the season. Dan
Gardo earned his second save of the season after pitching the final
inning allowing no hits while walking just one batter.
Lipscomb hurler
Brandon McClurg was credited with the loss. McClurg (4-4) pitched 6.2 innings,
giving up seven runs on 12 hits; he also walked two batters and hit
three others.
Campbell will
conclude the final portion of its regular season road trip on
Monday, as the Camels will face off with the Bulldogs of Alabama
A&M in doubleheader action. First pitch from Huntsville, Ala. will
begin at 1 p.m. (ET).
