BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell was unable to hold a 3-1 lead with 23
minutes remaining and dropped a 4-3 Atlantic Sun Conference men's
soccer decision Thursday night at Jacksonville.
Nedim Hrustic scored twice to offset a two-goal, one-assist
performance by Campbell's Mitchell Cardenas as the Dolphins struck
three times in a 3:40 span to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Camels scored three unanswered goals,
capped by Cardenas' free kick from 25 yards that put the Camels
ahead by two with 23:23 left.
However, Hrustic scored on a rebound in the box just 1:56 later,
then the Dolphins equalized on Hrustic's penalty kick less than a
minute later at 69:16.
Only 2:58 elapsed before Jacksonville was back in front when
Karamatic's shot was redirected into the goal by Camel defender Ben
Iiames.
Campbell (4-6-4, 2-4-0 A-Sun) lost its third-straight match.
Jacksonville (8-6-1, 3-3-0) won its second in a row.
The victory was just the second in the last 10 games in the series
for the Dolphins, who trail 7-2-1 during that span.
In the opening half, Cardenas hit the woodwork off a free kick just
8:54 into the game. Karamatic then scored his sixth goal of the
year at 14:24.
Just 2:30 into the second half, Jacksonville was cited for a hand
ball in the box and Cardenas equalized from the penalty spot. Only
31 seconds later, Cardenas hit a free kick into the area and
freshman Justin Franz headed the ball in for his second goal of the
year and a 2-1 Camel edge.
Campbell finished with a 16-14 edge in shots, while JU had 7
attempts on target compared to 5 for the Camels. Ethan Hall had
three saves in the Camel nets; Zach Greenwald made two stops for
JU.
The Camels continue their two-game road trip Saturday in a 5:00
p.m. kick-off at North Florida (3-8, 2-4), which defeated Mercer
2-1 in overtime Thursday night.
