CHARLOTTESVILLE,
Va. - Virginia scored a trio of first-half goals and the
nationally-ranked Cavaliers went on to a 4-1 win over Campbell in
men's soccer Tuesday at Klockner Stadium.
Virginia, ranked No. 10 in the Soccer America Top 25
released Tuesday, extended its nonconference unbeaten streak to 21
matches and improved to 10-3-3 in 2010. Campbell, playing its
regular-season finale, fell to 6-8-4 on the year.
UVA, celebrating its Senior Night, dominated play in the first
half, outshooting the Camels 7-1.
The Cavaliers grabbed the lead in the 17th minute when
Brian Span collected a loose ball 30 yards from goal and launched a
bending shot past diving Campbell keeper Ethan Hall.
UVA doubled its advantage just four minutes later when Brian Ownby
beat a Campbell defender and played a left-footed ball across the
six-yard box, where Will Bates one-touched it into the upper left
corner.
Virginia scored again in the 35th minute on Bates'
second goal of the night. Sean Hiller's left-footed cross was
flicked on Jimmy Simpson, and Hall was unable to knock away Bates'
header.
The Cavaliers added another goal just two minutes after the restart
when Bates played a cross into Bryan Lima, whose first touch beat
Ryan Amons in the Campbell net.
Campbell got on the scoreboard in the 80th minute when
Mitchell Cardenas put Eduardo Rodriguez through, and after a brief
struggle for possession, Rodriguez laid the ball off for Justin
Franz, who deposited a right footed shot from 12 yards into the
open goal.
Virginia outshot the Camels 8-7 and held a 6-5 advantage in
attempts on target. Diego Restrepo made four saves in the UVA
nets, and Hall made two for the Camels.
The Cavaliers were the third nationally-ranked foe on CU's 2010
fixtures list, joining UNC Wilmington (No. 23) and Florida Gulf
Coast (No. 24).
Campbell falls to 0-2 all-time against Virginia, who downed CU 2-1
in 2007.
The Camels return to action this weekend in the first round of the
Atlantic Sun Conference championship tournament.
Campbell owns the fifth seed and will travel to fourth-seeded
Lipscomb Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a first-round contest. The
