Urioste's goal lifts Men's Soccer over Appalachian 1-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Brian Urioste scored the game's only goal and Campbell defeated Appalachian State 1-0 in men's soccer action Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Unbeaten in its last three matches (2-0-1), Campbell improved to 2-2-3 on the year. Appalachian dropped to 3-2-2 and saw its two-match win streak halted.

Justin Smith began what proved to be the winning sequence when he rolled a pass to Mitchell Cardenas, whose back heel freed Urioste at the top of the area. The junior from Bethesda, Md., cut back and curled a left-footed shot from about 15 yards into the upper left corner of the net.

Appalachian's best chance for an equalizer came in the 85th minute when Nate Latigue broke free down the right flank, but Camel defender Aleksi Tossavainen slid to clear the ball out of danger for a corner kick.

In the final minute, Appalachian's Ryan Duffy rose for a long throw-in, but his header sailed well over Ryan Amons' cross bar.

Campbell finished with a 9-8 edge in shots, 4-2 in shots on goal. Amons made two saves, both in the first half, for his second career shutout. Danny Free had three stops in the Appalachian nets.

Both teams had chances in a scoreless first half.

In the 28th minute, Appalachian's Steven Sassano played a pass down the right flank to Antonio Harley, but Camel keeper Ryan Amons charged off the line to clear a shot for a corner kick.

Just a minute later, Khalil Johnson was pulled down just outside the Appalachian area by Ryan Duffy, who was booked for the foul. Mitchell Cardenas' ensuing free kick, however, struck the right side of the Mountaineer wall.

After 30 minutes, Sean Dreybus' half-volley sailed just high over Amons cross bar.

In the 40th minute, Franz headed Cardenas' serve on goal, but Appalachian keeper Danny Free didn't have to move for the save.

A post-match fireworks display followed the Family Weekend match. The Camels improved to 21-8 all-time in contests played during the traditional Parents' Day/Family Weekend celebration.

Campbell returns to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener at East Tennessee State.
