BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell rallied for two runs in the ninth,
bringing the tying run to the plate, but fell short as Belmont
topped the Camels 12-8 in game two of Saturday's Atlantic Sun
doubleheader at Taylor Field.
Senior second baseman Ellis
Lowe continued to etch his name atop Campbell's record books,
posting his 167 and 168th career RBIs to break the CU
all-time mark. Lowe passed Jeff Huff (167), who starred for the
Camels from 1998-01. The San Diego, Calif. native also owns the CU
hits, at-bats, runs, total bases and doubles records.
The Bruins also came away with a 7-2 win in game on behind the
complete game performance of starting pitcher Matt Hamann.
Belmont improves to 23-18 overall and 12-9 in A-Sun play, winning
its third consecutive series. The Camels, meanwhile, fall to 15-28
on the year and 2-19 in conference games.
In game two the Bruins collected nine runs through the first five
innings, including four in the second and fourth, but only two were
earned off CU starter Jake
Smith. Campbell committed three errors in the top of the
second, allowing three of those four runs to score.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lowe came to the plate with a runner on
and none out. On the first pitch he saw, Lowe pounded the ball over
the leftfield wall for his second homer of the season. The two RBIs
pushed Lowe's career total to 168, breaking the Campbell career
record.
After the Camels added another run on a Colin
Parker RBI single in the sixth, the Camels trailed only 9-6
with three at-bats remaining.
The Bruins, however, tagged three runs in the top of the eighth
when Tim Egerton sent a full count offering deep for a three-run
home run, giving Belmont a 12-6 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, however, the Camels mounted a charge
with two out, as Lowe, who was 4-for-5 in the game, singled. Kyle
Holmstrom then doubled to plate a run, and two batters later,
Blake
Boyce drove in another to bring the score to 12-8 with two
on.
After an Erick
Gaylord base hit, the Camels had the bases loaded with two
away. Jon Ivie then induced a groundout to end the game.
Josh Davis earned the win, going five innings with five runs on
nine hits and two strikeouts, moving to 4-0 on the season.
Smith was charged with the loss for Campbell to go to 2-3 on the
year. The junior allowed nine runs, but only two earned on eight
hits in 4 1/3 frames with a walk.
Jared Breen led the Bruins in game one, going 4-for-4 with an RBI
and a run scored. Greg Brody added a 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs
and two runs scored.
Ryne
Briley was 2-for-3 in game one for the Camels.
Hamann picked up the win to go to 5-1 on the season, tossing a
complete game with seven hits on two runs with seven strikeouts and
a walk.
Frank
Zier took the loss with six runs, four earned, on six hits in 5
1/3 innings on the mound. The junior also struck out and walked
three. Ryan
Mattes pitched the final 3 2/3 with a run on four hits with a
strikeout and a walk.
The Camels will be in action next week at Longwood, taking on the
Lancers in a doubleheader on April 28 in Farmville, Va.
